TOYOTA GR YARIS RALLYE: READY TO HIT THE TRACK

Toyota has launched its track-ready GR Yaris Rallye, taking the high-performance sports car to a new level of exhilarating performance.

Building on the proven credentials of the 200kW GR Yaris three-door hatch, the new Rallye edition introduces lightweight components and performance parts, specifically designed for drivers who want to experience a higher level of performance.

Key upgrades include circuit-tuned GR suspension, Torsen®1 limited-slip differentials on the front and rear axles, an ultra-light high-performance wheel-and-tyre package, and improved front brake ducting to improve cooling.

The GR Yaris Rallye exterior is distinguished by bespoke Frosted White crystal pearl paint2 and bright red brake callipers bearing the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing logo.

Inside, the Rallye supports enthusiastic driving with synthetic leather-accented sports front seats that feature large bolsters, red stitching and perforated Ultrasuede®1 inserts.

A uniquely numbered GR Yaris Rallye plaque adorns the centre console with an additional Rallye badge on the rear hatch.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales and Marketing Sean Hanley said the GR Yaris Rallye is a potent demonstration that motorsport is at the heart of the GR brand.

"GR Yaris has delighted enthusiasts since its launch last year as a road-going sports car developed from Toyota's championship-winning World Rally experience," Mr Hanley said.

"Now, GR Yaris Rallye dials up the focus on performance, delivering even sharper response and more precise handling, agility, stability and control due to its optimum torque distribution, stiffer suspension and prodigious grip.

"In fact, GR Yaris Rallye is almost the closest you can get to the Yaris World Rally Car without joining our World Rally team."

The two Torsen®1 limited-slip differentials on the GR Yaris Rallye control torque distribution between the left and right wheels to deliver natural and direct car control with enhanced stability, cornering performance and grip.

To further improve handling and traction, the GR Yaris Rallye is equipped with lightweight, high-strength 18-inch BBS forged alloy wheels with a 10-spoke design.

They are shod with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S high-performance 225/40ZR18 tyres, designed for extra grip, stability and control during high-speed driving.

The front MacPherson strut suspension from the GR Yaris has been upgraded with stiffer springs and anti-roll bars to realise the new model's full performance potential.

Delivering exceptional performance, the GR Yaris Rallye is powered by the same 200kW/370Nm 1.6-litre single-scroll turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine as the GR Yaris, propelling the car from standstill to 100km/h in 5.2 seconds.

GR Yaris Rallye achieves high-performance efficiency with a stop-start system helping it meet Euro 6 standards, returning combined cycle fuel consumption of 7.6 litres/100km3 with CO2 emissions of 172 grams/km4.

All that power is delivered to all four wheels through the clever GR-FOUR all-wheel drive (AWD) system via a six-speed intelligent manual gearbox (iMT) with rev-matching on up and down shifts.

GR-FOUR AWD is designed to optimise torque through a high-response coupling and an electronically controlled multiplate clutch located ahead of the rear differential.

It features three driver-selectable modes - Normal, Track and Sport - that apportion different ratios of front and rear drive according to the mode selected with maximum 60/40, 30/70 and 50/50 splits respectively.

GR Yaris Rallye features the same three-door body shell as the standard GR Yaris with its purposeful design and lightweight architecture including a carbon-fibre roof and aluminium panels for the doors, bonnet and tailgate.

The sculpted, aerodynamically-designed, lightweight body parts along with several weight-saving mechanical parts ensure the car achieves a kerb weight of just 1280kg5.

GR Yaris Rallye features the latest Toyota Safety Sense6 technologies including a pre-collision safety system with autonomous emergency braking, intersection assistance, high-speed adaptive cruise control, lane trace assist and road-sign assist.

Other safety features include ventilated disc brakes, emergency steering assist, auto high beam, blind spot monitor, head-up display, reversing camera and six airbags.

The driver-focused cabin is fitted with a small-diameter leather-wrapped steering wheel with fingertip controls, leather-wrapped short-throw gear shifter and handbrake, and aluminium pedals.

Large speedo and tacho dials sit either side of a 4.2-inch multi information display that offers an array of details including turbo pressure and gear-shift indicators.

The adjustable driver's seat and tilt-and-telescopic steering column contribute to an ideal seating position.

Two rear seats feature ISOFIX anchor points and are split 60/40- to expand the 141-litre luggage space to a maximum 737 litres when the seats are folded.

Standard premium equipment includes dual-zone climate-control air-conditioning, smart entry and start, 8-speaker JBL®1 audio, an advanced multimedia system and a 7-inch touchscreen display.

GR YARIS RALLYE: TRACK-READY FOR ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE

The GR Yaris was originally developed as a homologation special for World Rally Championship competition, so there is no doubt about its motorsport heart.

But with the Rallye version, Toyota has taken that to the next level with a particular focus on sharpening the handling for customers who revel in track days or club competition.

Building on the bespoke architecture of the GR Yaris that combines the front end of Toyota's GA-B platform - which debuted in the all-new Yaris - with the rear of the GA-C platform used in vehicles including Corolla, the Rallye version gains a new wheel and tyre package, high performance suspension, and a pair of Torsen®1 differentials to achieve that next level of performance.

As the crucial element that ensures the power is delivered to the road - or race circuit - the GR Yaris Rallye features ultra-lightweight BBS 18-inch forged alloy wheels.

Forged aluminium alloys are created by compressing a single billet of solid aluminium alloy into the required shape under up to 8,000 tonnes of pressure at temperatures of up to 400°C to achieve the optimum material density and strength.

This results in a wheel that is significantly stronger and lighter than a cast-alloy wheel, created from molten aluminium, and is designed to stand up to the rigours of extended high performance driving.

Complementing the 18-inch BBS wheels, the GR Yaris Rallye is fitted with 225/40ZR18 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres offering superb grip for excellent high-speed stability, control and braking.

The tyres use "bi-compound technology" that feature an outer side elastomer compound designed for optimum dry grip and a different inner side elastomer compound combined with silica for outstanding wet grip to deliver maximum traction in all conditions.

Agile handling and precision control

While the Rallye version shares the same MacPherson strut front and trailing multi-link rear suspension with GR Yaris, the front suspension features larger diameter coil springs and a thicker stabiliser bar providing a stiffer suspension for improved agility and stability at high speeds with flatter, more dynamic cornering.

The stiffer front end for the Rallye variant builds upon the GR Yaris suspension that already features rigid components designed to support enthusiastic performance driving.

At the front, these include stiffened bushes, front knuckle and front lower arm, which, together with large 35mm-bore dampers, all work together to deliver excellent road holding and responsiveness by minimising lateral and torsional movement.

Likewise, the rear suspension is tuned for optimal handling and traction in high-speed cornering with stiff bushes and bearings, 32mm bore dampers, and two pillow ball joints on the lower side of the rear axle.

With the GR Yaris Rallye, Toyota has further developed the drivetrain to provide quicker response and optimise the torque distribution to all four wheels through the fitment of Torsen®1 limited slip differentials at the front and rear.

Like the GR Yaris, the Rallye version uses the GR-FOUR AWD system that employs an electronically controlled multiplate clutch integrated with the rear differential to deliver a fulltime active torque split between the front and rear axles.

The system offers three driver selectable modes, Normal, Sport and Track that vary the torque split with Normal delivering 40 per cent of drive torque to the rear, Sport providing up to 70 per cent to the rear, and Track evenly split with a 50/50 front to rear ratio for optimum stability on race tracks.

The torque split ratios are not locked however, and irrespective of the selected mode, an ECU automatically adjusts torque balance in response to driver inputs (steering angle, throttle and brake-pedal activation), vehicle behaviour (such as acceleration and yaw rate) and road or track conditions.

The addition of the Torsen®1 differentials also means that drive torque is appropriately split across each axle between the left and right wheels according to conditions, supporting quicker acceleration response, greater stability and improved acceleration out of corners.

In a standard open differential, drive torque is split evenly between the left and right wheels but it can only transmit as much torque as the wheel with the least amount of traction allows.

With a Torsen®1 differential, the instant a difference in wheel speed across the axle is detected, friction created by the planetary gear set in the differential will force more drive torque to the wheel that has the greater traction.

In terms of straight line acceleration, this helps minimise wheelspin when cornering with more drive torque directed to the wheels with the greatest load, enhancing high traction and agility.

At the limits, the GR-FOUR system and Torsen®1 differentials also work in conjunction with vehicle stability control and the anti-skid brake system for optimum drive and brake forces.

Powered for high performance

The application of the sophisticated drive system is certainly warranted with the GR Yaris Rallye drawing power from the world's most powerful mass-produced three cylinder engine.

Developed from lessons in motorsport, the 1.6-litre turbocharged powerplant generates a maximum power of 200kW at 6500rpm and peak torque of 370Nm from 3000-4600rpm - giving the GR Yaris Rallye an impressive power to weight ratio of 156kW/tonne.

The 12-valve dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) engine features variable valve timing, a combination of high-pressure direct injection with a six-hole spray and low pressure 10-hole port injection, and a 10.5:1 compression ratio.

The combustion chambers have a pent-roof design for more efficient combustion with minimal heat loss while shot peening of metal surfaces and a resin coating for the piston skirt reduce friction and improve durability.

Other measures to accommodate high output include an aluminium oil cooler for high heat exchange efficiency, a large-capacity belt-driven water pump and large 10.8-litre air cleaner with a compound filter, contributing to low pressure losses.

The high-performance exhaust system has been designed not only to help the GR Yaris meet Euro 6 emission standards, but also deliver a rowdy sports soundtrack.

With dual mufflers and circular sound baffles wrapped around the dual tailpipes, the exhaust provides the perfect audio and visual accompaniment for a high-performance sports car.

Fully engaged driving experience

The engine is mated to a high-torque-capacity six-speed intelligent manual gearbox (iMT) with a short shift lever for rapid gearshifts.

Actuated via a centre-console switch, iMT provides rev-matching for smooth up and downshifts, while a travel-adjusted clutch mechanism ensures consistent pedal feel and compensates for clutch-disc wear over time.

Electric power rack-and-pinion steering provides linear feel and feedback with an aluminium steering column, bush-less fastening between the manual steering gear housing and suspension member, and controlled friction characteristics.

Given the dynamic potential of the GR Yaris, it is fitted with a high-performance brake package for optimum response and control.

A short-stroke brake pedal has also been tuned to provide solid feedback while a drum-in-disc park brake with a manual lever enables fine-tuned control in performance driving.

There are large 356mm two-piece front ventilated discs with four-piston callipers and 297mm ventilated rear discs with two-piston callipers. Along with high-friction brake pads, they deliver superb heat dissipation and fade-resistant braking performance.

Electronic assistance includes anti-skid brakes with brake assist, steering-assisted vehicle stability control, traction control, hill-start assist, brake hold and active cornering assist.

Stability and traction-control functions can be switched off with Sport or Track modes engaged, supporting sporty driving on a racetrack.

GR YARIS RALLYE: SPORTING STYLE AND FUNCTIONAL FORM

Toyota has distinguished the GR Yaris Rallye by adding aesthetic and functional touches that befit an outstanding pure-bred sports car.

Improved brake ducting also provides more cooling to the bright red brake callipers that highlight the car's exceptional stopping performance.

Aside from these modifications and forged alloy wheels the Rallye is a visual mirror of the GR Yaris, with an aggressive, muscular aesthetic that is both stylish and functional.

It has a broad, stable platform that supports a bodyshell that measures 3995mm long, 1805mm wide and 1455mm high.

The body has been constructed with a highly rigid frame and extensive use of lightweight materials including a carbon-fibre polymer roof that saves 3.5kg compared with a steel equivalent, and aluminium for the bonnet, doors and tailgate.

Extensive use of high-tensile steel results in thinner side members while the rear bumper upper and lower are made from Toyota-developed super olefin polymer, which is light and does not deteriorate even after repeated recycling.

Aggressive styling cues include a large rectangular grille and wide under-spoiler running the full width of the car, complete with lower corner lips that help generate downforce in straight-line and when cornering.

A tapering roofline, rear spoiler and rear three-quarter panels are designed to direct airflow along the body and reduce drag while the lower body features aerodynamic side skirts that flow up into the broad, sculpted rear fenders.

Underbody covers, spats in front of each tyre, and aero steps built into the inside of the rear bumper further aid efficient airflow and enhance downforce.

The bold purposeful styling of the front end is mirrored at the rear with a wide, low stance accentuated by the flared rear fenders, dual tailpipes and lower diffuser.

The GR Yaris Rallye is available in a single Frosted White crystal pearl paint finish1.

Driver-focused cabin

Inside, the Rallye variant is distinguished by its big-bolstered synthetic leather-accented sports seats with red Ultrasuede®2 panel inserts.

The combination of suede and the large side bolsters helps ensure driver and front passenger are firmly held in place, with plenty of support and comfort during high performance driving.

This driver-centric focus is evident in all facets of the cabin design from the small-diameter leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel with fingertip controls for audio, phone, cruise control and other functions, to the short-throw, leather-wrapped gearshift lever.

Blistered aluminium pedals are positioned to support competition driving techniques like "heel & toe" while drivers can also achieve an ideal position for optimal control with seat-height adjustment of 60mm and sliding adjustment of 260mm.

The steering column can be adjusted for rake and reach through 40mm and 50mm respectively providing further ability to achieve the perfect driving position for stability and control.

Up front, the instrument cluster features two large analogue dials for the speedometer and tacho, split by a 4.2-inch multi information display that incorporates indicators for AWD mode, gear selection and turbo pressure as well as other vehicle data and settings.

The slim, dual-level instrument panel has been designed to offer maximum forward visibility with a seven-inch touchscreen offering full control of Toyota's latest multimedia system.

It incorporates satellite navigation3 with enhanced voice recognition, AM/FM/DAB+4 radio, Bluetooth®5 connectivity, Apple CarPlay®6 and Android Auto™7 compatibility and myToyota apps including Waze®2 and Stitcher™2 (IOS) and WebEx™2 (Android™8).

A premium eight-speaker JBL®2 sound system features active noise control, Clari-Fi compressed audio restoration, and engine sound enhancement that is integrated with throttle action and vehicle speed.

Given the car's high performance, it is suitably equipped with an extensive array of advanced driver assistance technologies for optimum safety.

Under the Toyota Safety Sense package, it features a pre- collision safety system9 with autonomous emergency braking to help avoid or mitigate the consequences of a collision.

It can detect pedestrians day and night and cyclists during the day. It also offers emergency steering assist and intersection assistance that can detect oncoming cars when turning right, and pedestrians crossing the street, when turning right or left9.

GR Yaris Rallye also features high-speed adaptive cruise control9 above approximately 30km/h. Lane trace assist9 and lane departure alert with steering assistance3 help ensure the vehicle does not deviate from its lane.

Other safety features include auto high beam, road-sign assist, blind spot monitor, a reversing camera with guidelines, head-up display and six airbags.
