TOYOTA LANDCRUISER 300 SERIES: THE RETURN OF A LEGEND

Toyota has launched its all-new LandCruiser 300 Series, kicking off the next chapter in the legendary off-roader's storied history.

Newly constructed from the ground up, the all-new 300 Series takes the capability, durability and reliability of the iconic LandCruiser nameplate to new levels, while also making advancements in safety, comfort, performance and technology.

Key upgrades include a new 3.3-litre V6 twin-turbo diesel engine, a bold new exterior design underpinned by the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, and advanced driver assistance technologies to provide superb on-road performance and unmatched off-road capability.

The LandCruiser 300 Series range also offers customers more choice than ever, with two new flagship variants - the luxury Sahara ZX and the off-road-focused GR Sport - joining the core GX, GXL, VX and Sahara range.

The Sahara ZX offers unmatched levels of comfort and style for LandCruiser buyers, while the GR Sport is the most off-road capable LandCruiser yet with its world-first electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (e-KDSS) stabiliser bar control system, and front and rear locking differentials as standard.

The LandCruiser 300 Series can be identified by its strong design language, combining trademark LandCruiser features with a new, powerful and emotive styling that is equal parts form and function.

Inside, the LandCruiser's cabin blends luxurious style with functionality, and increased space and flexibility, ensuring long and taxing journeys through the Australian wilderness are done in utmost comfort.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the all-new LandCruiser 300 Series would further strengthen the reputation of the LandCruiser in the tough Australian conditions.

"Ever since it was imported into Australia to work on the Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme in the 1950s, the LandCruiser has become synonymous with tackling the harshest conditions our country has to offer," Mr Hanley said.

"Equally at home in the school car park or the middle of the outback, the new 300 Series LandCruiser takes the comfort, safety and off-road ability of our flagship SUV to new heights.

"We fully expect this new generation to carry on the stellar legacy of the LandCruiser in Australia," he said.

Underpinning the LandCruiser range is the first TNGA body-on-frame platform - which delivers overall weight reduction and increased body rigidity, ride comfort and handling stability in all conditions.

All LandCruiser variants are powered by a new-generation 3.3-litre V6 twin-turbo diesel engine producing 227kW at 4000rpm and 700Nm from 1600-2600rpm, marking a 27kW/50Nm increase over the V8 it replaces.

The V6 engine is mated exclusively to a segment-first 10-speed torque converter automatic transmission that improves response and fuel economy while reducing noise, vibration and harshness.

Thanks to its new-generation engine, intelligent transmission and weight-saving measures, fuel economy has reduced by 6.3 per cent on the combined cycle compared with the outgoing V8, to 8.9 litres per 100km1.

Weight reduction has been achieved through a range of measures, including the extensive use of aluminium on the bonnet, roof, doors and rear hatch. Innovative spot-welding techniques and lighter, more compact components also contribute to weight reduction.

The 300 Series retains the LandCruiser's 3500kg braked towing capacity2, offering effortless towing thanks to a combination of greater torque, the sophisticated 10-speed transmission and a stronger, more stable chassis. A tow wiring harness is also now offered as standard, making the process of connecting a trailer easier than ever.

The lighter construction has also yielded an improvement in payload across the range by up to 90kg, depending on the variant.

Power is delivered to all four wheels, with a newly developed transfer case that reduces shift times between high and low range by 28 per cent, and now sits 18mm higher to reduce the risk of off-road damage. A lockable centre differential is also standard across the range.

The 300 Series debuts the new-generation multi-terrain select (MTS) control system, featuring six different modes for off-road terrain - five in high range and four in low range - for ultimate traction in the harshest conditions.

Developed extensively in Australia, MTS offers dirt, sand, mud, deep snow, rock and new auto modes, the latter of which is able to intelligently sense the terrain underfoot and adapt the traction control systems accordingly.

Combining with MTS is the low-speed crawl control function and the multi-terrain monitor (MTM) system which provides 360-degree and underfloor views of the path and approaching obstacles.

The latest Toyota Safety Sense3 technologies include the autonomous emergency braking pre-collision safety system with new functionality for LandCruiser including daytime cyclist and oncoming vehicle detection, nighttime pedestrian detection, intersection turn assist and steering assist.

Active cruise control now offers curve speed reduction, while road sign assist, and on VX grades and above, lane trace assist with steering wheel vibration, have been introduced for the first time.

Other safety features on all grades include automatic high beam, reversing camera and 10 airbags. New Toyota Connected Services4 offers enhanced safety and security with automatic assistance in the event of an emergency5, and vehicle tracking6 in the event the car is stolen.

As a flagship Toyota offering, the cabin of the LandCruiser has been designed to provide premium comfort and the latest multimedia technology.

LandCruiser VX grades and above feature a new 12.3-inch touchscreen with enhanced display quality, functionality and smartphone compatibility, paired with the new 7.0-inch multi information display (MID) in the instrument cluster.

Switches have been grouped according to their functions for more intuitive operation, highlighting the stylish but functional theme of the cabin.

Seating for up to seven occupants (GXL, VX and Sahara grades) ensures the whole family can travel in comfort, with the third-row seats now able to stow away into the luggage space floor.

Along with the significant upgrade in features and technology, the LandCruiser's cabin has been extensively soundproofed to ensure occupants travel in quiet comfort at all times.

The LandCruiser 300 Series is covered by Toyota's five-year/unlimited kilometre Warranty Advantage, affording peace of mind for owners on or off the beaten track.

For the first time on LandCruiser, the Toyota Service Advantage has been extended from three years/60,000km to five years/100,000km, providing customers with capped-price servicing for their first 10 services at a cost of $375 each7. Intervals are every six months or 10,000km, whichever comes first.

Owners will be able to extend their warranty on the engine and driveline to seven years by sticking to the service schedule8.

LOCAL DEVELOPMENT HELPS SHAPE NEW LANDCRUISER

Toyota's local engineering and evaluation team has long played a role in the development of new LandCruiser models and for the all-new 300 Series, it took that to new heights.

Since 2008, Toyota Australia has been designated a Centre of Excellence for four-wheel drive development within the Toyota world thanks to the recognised skills of the local vehicle development team, and the fact that Australia has 80 per cent of the world's different on and off-road conditions making it perfect for global development and validation.

Development work for the all-new LandCruiser 300 Series started here in 2014 when Australia became the first destination for the Toyota Five Continents Drive, conducted in collaboration with local and Japanese engineers.

Covering approximately 20,000km in 72 days with a range of vehicles including the LandCruiser 200 Series, the drive program not only sought to determine how the model could be improved by driving it on and off-road across Australia, but by talking directly to customers who used it in everyday, real-world situations.

In 2015, the first of several prototypes was delivered to Australia, resulting in an unprecedented amount of development, testing and validation for the Australian and global market.

Targets were set to substantially improve on-road performance, comfort, responsiveness, handling and durability as well as off-road capability.

In total, six prototype vehicles have participated in testing over the course of the past six years in Australia - the most ever sent outside of Japan for testing and the most of any previous LandCruiser tested here.

Testing was conducted in areas such as the desert regions of central Australia, the Victorian high country, areas in the tropics and at the AARC testing facility in Anglesea.

Input from local testing contributed significantly to the new platform and body structure while powertrain testing and validation, particularly in respect of towing capability, was fed back to Toyota in Japan.

Toyota's Australian engineers played a substantial role in tuning the enhanced off-road control systems including the multi terrain select and new electronic stabiliser bar control (e-KDSS) over a vast variety of surfaces and harsh terrain.

Tuning and calibration of off-road systems that included suspension, traction and drivetrain control was carried out over thousands of kilometres.

With our wide variety of road surfaces, Australian engineers also evaluated and developed tyres for global input ensuring that the new specially developed tyres meet the expectations of customers in real world conditions with optimised balance of on and off-road traction, fuel efficiency and puncture resistance.

Local Toyota Genuine Accessories1 are always developed for every new model and for LandCruiser, it was especially important that was integrated into the program from the start. This has ensured that every new major accessory developed is fully integrated into all the vehicles chassis and dynamic designs, as well as safety systems.

BOLD DESIGN MARRIES STYLISH FORM AND PRACTICAL FUNCTION

The all-new LandCruiser 300 Series features a bold evolution of the LandCruiser family's design language, resulting in a vehicle that looks both more robust and sophisticated than ever before.

Measuring between 4980mm and 5015mm long, 1980mm and 2000mm wide, and 1950mm tall1 depending on the grade, the new body maintains similar proportions to its predecessor, but with a distinctive new design.

From the front, new LandCruiser pays homage to its heritage through its wide, horizontal grille, flanked by slimline headlights, giving it an imposing on-road stance.

Three different front end treatments separate the core grades from the two new flagships with the Sahara ZX featuring a refined elegant visage and the off-road focussed GR Sport offering a strong black-themed look with badging that references the LandCruiser heritage.

Across all grades, the lights and radiator grille have been set higher than the previous model to avoid the risk of damage when off-roading, while the front bumper on core grades has been made more rounded.

From the side, the cabin has been set further back as a tribute to the earlier generations of LandCruiser, while the improved off-road ability is also visible on the rear bumper which curves more steeply upwards to improve departure angle by 1˚.

The rear combination lamps have been arranged in a horizontal layout, neatly integrated into the new aluminium rear hatch, while the rear end of the vehicle has been tapered for better aerodynamic performance.

Each variant receives its own wheel design, with 17-inch six-spoke steel wheels for the GX.

The GXL variant features an 18-inch alloy six-spoke design.

This design gains a polished "super chrome metallic" finish on VX and Sahara grades.

The all-new LandCruiser is available in up to 10 solid, crystal, metallic and mica metallic colours, consisting of Glacier White, Ebony, Crystal Pearl, Arctic White, Silver Pearl, Graphite, Merlot Red, Saturn Blue, Dusty Bronze and Eclipse Black2.

At the top-of-the-range, the new flagship Sahara ZX and GR Sport will be easily distinguished by their own unique exterior trims.

The Sahara ZX has been designed to give the LandCruiser a more 'prestige' look, with a graceful and purposeful bodykit worthy of a flagship Toyota product.

The front fascia design features a horizontally flipped lower bumper that gives the impression of a stand-out variant with a more imposing on-road stance.

In side profile, the side steps give the Sahara ZX a uniform level of clearance front to rear, while the unique polished 12-spoke 20-inch alloy wheels add to the premium feel.

A unique rear bumper with chrome ornamentation gives the Sahara ZX the impression of a low centre of gravity, and completes the exterior look of the new variant.

While the Sahara ZX brings a sense of class and style, the GR Sport has been designed for owners with a passion for off-road driving, with a focus on functionality and authenticity.

The GR Sport is instantly identifiable by its black mesh grille with 'TOYOTA' lettering, GR badging on the front and side, and an exclusive black lower front bumper with silver ornamentation on the skid plate.

Black touches can be found on the side steps, wheelarch and mudguard mouldings, roof rails, lower rear hatch edge, door handles, exterior mirrors, side window mouldings and 18-inch matte black alloy wheels.

A matching black bumper with silver skid plate can also be found at the rear, along with additional GR Sport badging and blacked-out 'LAND CRUISER' lettering.

The new-generation body structure has been designed to be lighter, sturdier and more corrosion-resistant than before, helping to improve collision safety, fuel efficiency, handling stability and ride comfort.

A combination of high tensile strength steel, increased spot-welding points, structural adhesive and aluminium body outer panels ensure the optimal mix of strength, stability and weight reduction.

Aluminium is used for the bonnet, roof, rear hatch and door panels, while rust-resistant sheet steel is found on the underbody and outer door frames to enhance durability.

Furthermore, a vast array of improvements to noise, vibration and harshness ensure the 300 Series will be the quietest and most comfortable LandCruiser yet.

Measures include improved sound deadening material in the vehicle floor, roof, instrument panel and door trims, cushioned cabin mounts, acoustic glass and a raft of revisions to the new engine to deliver improved quietness.

LANDCRUISER CABIN OFFERS ENHANCED INTERIOR COMFORT, FEATURES AND TECHNOLOGY

LandCruiser designers have created an interior environment that provides comfort in even the harshest conditions, while offering the latest technology and quality befitting Toyota's flagship vehicle.

The broad horizontal upper instrument panel gives the dash a sense of width and sturdiness, matching the powerful impression provided by the exterior styling.

For improved comfort, the top of the console box, driver and front passenger kneepads and lower length on the centre console are all upholstered in soft-touch materials.

Drivers are greeted by a well laid out instrument cluster with a new 7-inch multi information display (MID) for VX grades and above, and 4.2-inch MID for GX and GXL versions, centred between an analogue-style tachometer and speedometer.

Designers have also prioritised functionality, with all dashboard switches grouped according to their driving, audio and climate functions.

Driving mode functions are now grouped onto the driver's side of the centre console, with a new-look drive mode selector on grades above GX.

The centre console continues to house other driving function switches including the low-range and differential lock switches.

All climate control functions have been neatly arranged directly under the multimedia display, and now feature more prominently contoured buttons for ease of use while maintaining eye contact with the road.

The audio and infotainment switches are grouped under the climate control switches and on the steering wheel, providing simple and intuitive operation.

The new-look lower centre console encompasses the redesigned shift lever, drive mode and off-road functions, parking brake and a pair of cupholders, with a clean and easy-to-use layout.

The LandCruiser's seats have been redesigned for greater ergonomic comfort and stability during cornering, with larger side bolsters providing greater passenger comfort, even on long and taxing journeys.

High-quality fabric upholstery has been applied to GX and GXL variants, with six-way manual adjustment for the driver and front passenger.

VX grades and above gain eight-way power adjustable front seats with lumbar support. VX variants gain premium seat materials while higher grades feature genuine leather-accented upholstery.

Taking seating comfort even further, versions with power-adjustable front seats also gain three-stage heating and ventilation functions, ensuring passenger comfort in even the harshest weather conditions.

Second-row seats feature a reclining function as well as 92mm of extra legroom, and can be folded and tumbled forward to create as much flat cargo space as possible in the rear.

GX and GXL grades offer a 60:40 split-fold second row seat that on VX grades and above becomes a 40:20:40 arrangement, while outboard passengers in Sahara, Sahara ZX and GR Sport variants are treated to second-row seat heating and ventilation.

GXL, VX and Sahara grades are also offered with two third-row seats that now fold flat into the floor, increasing available luggage space with 250mm of extra width. For Sahara, power operation means the third row seats can also be stowed at the touch of a button.

For five-seat versions, the newly designed cabin offers a rear luggage space capacity of 1131 litres that can be expanded to 2052 litres with the rear seats folded.

With the third row seat now folding flat into the floor, seven seat variants provide 1004 litres of luggage capacity and seating for five, with up to 1967 litres with both rear rows folded.

The all-new LandCruiser features a vast array of additional storage options including the dual-opening centre console storage box (cool box on Sahara, Sahara ZX and GR Sport), centre storage tray/box, overhead sunglasses holder, glovebox and a range of door bins and cupholders capable of holding 750ml bottles.

A extensive amount of information and entertainment is provided by the latest generation multimedia system with a 12.3-inch electronic multi vision (T-EMV) touchscreen - the largest offered on any Toyota vehicle- on VX and above.

Superb sound quality is delivered through a 10-speaker Pioneerฎ1 audio system for VX while Sahara, Sahara ZX and GR Sport variants step up to a JBLฎ1 14-speaker system and a full-colour head-up display.

GX and GXL variants are equipped with a 9.0-inch display with a six-speaker audio system.

The new multimedia system is compatible with Apple CarPlayฎ2 and Android Auto™3, and features Bluetooth connectivity4, AM/FM/DAB+ radio5 and voice recognition.

In VX grades and above, the system adds satellite navigation6 and a CD/DVD player while all variants bar the entry-level GX feature Qi wireless phone charging7. Two USB terminals and a 12V socket allow further charging options.

For second-row occupants, the centre console features two USB ports, a 12V socket and for Sahara and Sahara XZ grades, an HDMI terminal.

Long family journeys in the Sahara and Sahara ZX are a breeze with the standard fitment of the rear seat entertainment system (RSE), consisting of a pair of 11.6-inch high-definition touchscreen displays, which are also capable of smartphone mirroring.

Two different modes are available on the RSE, with front-rear interlocking mode allowing the same content to be played for the front and rear seats, with sound available through both the speakers and headphones.

Independent mode allows different content to be played for not only the front and rear seats, but also the individual screens.

Along with WiFi-powered smartphone mirroring, RSE can also be wired through a 720p high-definition HDMI input, while touchscreen operation replaces the need for a remote control.

To ensure the optimum comfort in all weather conditions, VX, Sahara, Sahara ZX and GR Sport are treated to a four-zone automatic climate-control system, with front and rear temperature sensors.

GX variants have dual-zone automatic climate control with rear air ducts, while GXL adds an automatic rear cooler with its own controls.

Blowers positioned throughout the cabin ensure plentiful airflow reaches occupants, regardless of where they are seated.

A moonroof on VX grades and above adds extra light into an already comfortable and roomy cabin.

NEW TWIN-TURBO V6 DIESEL PROVIDES V8-BEATING PERFORMANCE

The beating heart of each LandCruiser 300 Series variant is the newly developed 3.3-litre V6 twin-turbo diesel engine, bringing increased performance and refinement with improved fuel economy and emissions.

Continuing the legendary legacy of Toyota diesel engines, the new F33A-FTV engine has been built from the ground up to offer performance and reliability worthy of the LandCruiser nameplate.

Engineers worked extensively to optimise as many aspects of the V6 engine as possible, starting with the 19mm shorter steel pistons (instead of aluminium pistons for greater heat resistance) with a 13.4mm reduced compression height compared to the outgoing V8, to lower weight while offering excellent fuel efficiency and power output.

Cylinder heads have been made lighter and stronger than before, while the cylinder block has been engineered to provide greater fuel efficiency and durability while reducing cabin noise.

Piston ring tension has been reduced by 27 per cent for reduced friction, and the crankshaft has been made sturdier with the use of high-strength special carbon steel.

The new V6 is tuned to produce 227kW at 4000rpm and a meaty 700Nm over a wide 1600-2600rpm band, an improvement of 13.5 per cent (power) and 7.7 per cent (torque) over the previous V8.

The two-way turbocharging system ensures smooth and efficient power delivery. At low speed, the primary turbocharger is engaged for responsive power delivery. As engine speed increases, the second turbocharger is activated around 2600rpm to deliver optimal power and torque with smooth acceleration.

Both turbos have been designed to maximise low-speed torque - perfect for off-roading or towing - while the surrounding components have been made as heat-resistant as possible to maximise exhaust gas temperatures and therefore deliver a higher output.

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) has been redesigned to achieve early activation of the catalyst.

Fuel economy for the new V6 has been improved by 6.3 per cent on the combined cycle test and is rated at 8.9 litres per 100km1, with CO2 emissions of 235 grams per kilometre2.

Newly adopted hydraulic engine mounts help reduce noise and vibrations, while the common rail fuel injection system is quieter.

Teamed to the V6 engine is the newly developed AJA0F 10-speed torque converter automatic transmission, tuned specifically to provide maximum torque at low rpm for optimum performance and a smooth, quiet drive.

The new 10-speed automatic shifts twice as fast as the previous six-speed auto, and the additional ratios make a significant contribution to the improved fuel economy.

The lock-up control range of the transmission's torque converter has been expanded to allow for implementation from low speeds, further enhancing fuel economy and direct driving performance.

Having a wider range of gears to choose from, the new transmission offers more dynamic performance with a lower ratio in first gear for better start-off acceleration, overlapping gear ratios for the first five gears to fully utilise the peak power band, and a longer top gear ratio for quieter and more economical highway driving.

Three drives modes are offered as standard - Eco, Normal and Sport - that adjust the throttle, transmission and steering parameters to suit the driving experience and conditions, while Eco mode can also reduce the output of the air conditioner for extra fuel savings.

Sahara ZX and GR Sport offer five modes with Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport S and Sport S+ settings offering fine-tuning of the suspension settings, in addition to the throttle, steering and transmission.

Power is delivered to the wheels through a full-time all-wheel-drive system with a transfer case - that now shifts 28 per cent faster than before.

A lockable centre differential is fitted to all grades to achieve true 4x4 capability by distributing torque 50:50 between the front and rear axles.

Extra off-road protection is afforded by the addition of an oil pan guard, which helps prevent damage from stones and unforeseen obstacles.

The LandCruiser 300 Series' all-new engine and transmission combination will ensure the performance, durability and reliability demanded by LandCruiser owners to take them across the harshest environments in the world, and back again.

NEW TNGA PLATFORM AND ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY DELIVER COMFORT, SAFETY, DYNAMIC HANDLING AND OUTSTANDING OFF-ROAD CAPABILITY

A state-of-the-art Toyota New Generation Architecture (TNGA) platform underpins the all-new LandCruiser, ushering in across-the-board improvements from driving dynamics, to comfort and safety.

The LandCruiser 300 Series sees the first application of a TNGA body-on-frame platform, which brings better weight balance, a lower centre of gravity and higher structural rigidity.

Although it shares its 2850mm wheelbase length with the outgoing 200 Series, both front and rear tracks have been increased to provide greater stability on and off the road.

GX models have 1687mm front and 1688mm rear tracks, while all other variants gain 27mm in front track to 1667mm, and an extra 33mm in the rear track of 1668mm, compared to the previous model.

All models gain 10mm in ground clearance1 to 235mm, ensuring able transition in harsh terrain.

The new platform features 20 per cent higher structural rigidity than the outgoing LandCruiser platform, while also shaving up to 160kg off its kerb weight2, depending on the grade.

Enhanced rigidity in the platform has been achieved through the use of additional adhesive points and the adoption of laser tailored blank welding.

The new frame features larger cross-members and more 5mm steel and superhigh tensile steel plate for increased strength.

A strong, highly rigid towing receiver has been built into the rear cross member providing towing stability and LandCruiser's outstanding 3500kg braked towing capacity3.

A trailer wiring harness is now also fitted as standard on every grade to enable easy fitment of an optional towbar.

Reduced weight has resulted in improved payload capacities for the 300 Series, improving by between 40-90kg compared to the 200 Series with a maximum payload of up to 785kg on GX.

The LandCruiser's centre of gravity has been lowered by 6mm by moving the engine and transmission 70mm further back and 28mm lower.

The cabin and rear two rows of seats have also been shifted further back by 112mm to help achieve an improved weight distribution of 53.5 per cent front / 46.5 per cent rear.

At the front, the new LandCruiser employs double wishbone independent front suspension for better driving performance in all conditions, with a 15mm increase in rebound stroke, stronger coil springs and increased aluminium componentry.

Rear suspension consists of a four-link rigid axle with coil springs for optimised durability and off-road performance.

More aluminium is found on the control arms for greater rigidity and lighter weight, while the rear shock absorbers have been oriented more vertically with a 20mm increase in rebound stroke, for enhanced suspension response, ride comfort and cornering stability.

Ride comfort and body control are further enhanced on Sahara ZX and GR Sport grades with the standard fitment of the adaptive variable suspension (AVS) system that regulates shock absorber stiffness, response speed and suspension walk based on driving conditions and drive mode selected.

AVS improves ride comfort both on and off-road, while the GR Sport takes off-road traction and stability even further with the addition of the electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (e-KDSS) electronic swaybar disconnect system.

The system independently and automatically controls the front and rear stabiliser bars depending on the surface and driving conditions.

When driving on the road, the stabiliser bars can be locked to help enhance handling stability when cornering.

Off-road, where wheel articulation is more important to ensure all four wheels maintain connection with the ground, the e-KDSS system can automatically and independently unlock the front and rear stabiliser bars.

In the GR Sport, this enables a combined 715mm of wheel articulation - 46mm more than the outgoing 200 Series when equipped with the previous generation hydraulic KDSS.

Paired alongside e-KDSS, the GR Sport sees the return of factory front and rear lockable differentials as standard on a LandCruiser, combining to provide unprecedented levels of off-road traction.

Offering fully locking differentials ensures drive is provided even when minimal traction is available, splitting torque evenly between the left and right wheels regardless of driving conditions.

The Sahara ZX prioritises on-road driving control with the standard fitment of a Torsenฎ4 limited-slip differential on the rear axle, automatically sending torque to the wheel with more grip enhancing stability in slippery conditions.

Stopping power is provided by a new braking system with slotted fin type disc rotors designed to enhance anti-fade performance, while the callipers feature an offset cylinder design that provides even pad pressure, preventing inconsistent pad wear.

A rack-and-pinion steering system combines hydraulic power assistance for functional reliability with an electric steering actuator that work together to provide optimal control with responsive feedback and a smooth feel on all surfaces.

Optimal comfort, stability and traction in all conditions is managed and controlled by the electronic all-wheel drive integrated management (AIM) system, that automatically adjusts brake, suspension, engine, steering and four-wheel drive functions.

Sensors communicate with the vehicle's ECU, transmitting information on parameters such as acceleration, steering input and yaw rate, recognising the driver's intention and ensuring superb handling control and vehicle stability.

All variants bar the GX come with the latest generation multi-terrain select (MTS) technology, allowing the driver to select the optimal setting for the situation at hand with six different modes to choose from, depending on the gearing range.

In high range, drivers can choose from dirt, sand, mud and deep snow settings, while engaging low range offers sand, mud and rock modes with a new auto setting now available for both high and low range.

Each mode tailors the various driving force, brake and traction systems to the conditions. For example, engaging sand mode will allow for more wheel slip while avoiding getting bogged, while rock mode suppresses tyre slip and intelligently transfers torque to the wheels to achieve optimal speed control.

Off-roading is made even safer with complementary features including speed-adjustable crawl control, downhill assist control (DAC), hill start assist control (HAC) and turn assist function.

Crawl control allows the driver to set and maintain a constant low speed up to 30km/h and controls the engine output and brakes, allowing for automatic drive input in rough conditions.

Turn assist effectively shortens the turning circle of the LandCruiser when off-road by braking the inside rear wheel during a turn when crawl control is activated.

The introduction of the LandCruiser 300 Series has seen a vast expansion of the Toyota Safety Sense5 suite of driver assistance features, that combine radar and camera sensor technology to ensure the utmost levels of safety for all occupants.

The comprehensive list of features starts with the pre-collision safety (PCS) system, which now detects vehicles ahead and pedestrians day and night, as well as oncoming vehicles and cyclists during the day.

PCS now also includes intersection turn assist, and emergency steering assist on VX and above, for the first time on LandCruiser.

The pre-collision system can provide varying levels of assistance via visual and audio warnings through to partial or full braking power, depending on the driver's level of input.

Intersection turn assist can prevent collisions with oncoming traffic or pedestrians crossing the road when the driver is making a turn at an intersection, while emergency steering assist can help to enhance stability and prevent lane departure when executing an evasive manoeuvre.

Active cruise control has been enhanced to include curve speed reduction, which can automatically reduce vehicle speed to ensure safe cornering while maintaining the selected cruise-control speed.

Active cruise control is capable of low-speed following including stop-start driving, and can work with road-sign assist to reset the vehicle speed setting in accordance with the speed limit.

Other available active safety features include lane trace assist and parking support brake (available for the first time on VX grade and above), lane departure alert, rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot monitor, and automatic high beam.

Passive safety technologies including parking sensors and a reversing camera, 10 airbags (plus third-row curtain airbags for GXL, VX and Sahara), vehicle stability control, traction control and anti-lock brakes.

The multi-terrain monitor (MTM) on VX and above offers unparalleled views of the car's surroundings, allowing the driver to see all the way around and, when off-roading, underneath the vehicle, thanks to a suite of four cameras placed around the vehicle.

For the first time, Toyota Connected Services6 (TCS) is available on LandCruiser, providing emergency assistance to occupants in the event of an accident or unforeseen circumstance.

TCS can automatically generate an emergency call7 to a 24/7 Toyota emergency call centre and relay the location of the vehicle, in the event of a collision requiring intervention or where an airbag is deployed.

Occupants can also manually trigger the SOS emergency call function8 that immediately contacts Toyota's call centre, who can then send out emergency services to the location.

If the vehicle is reported stolen, the system can help authorities locate the vehicle through the stolen vehicle tracking (SVT)9 function.

ACCESSORIES FOR EVERY ADVENTURE

Toyota engineers have developed a range of Toyota Genuine Accessories1 worthy of the LandCruiser 300 Series, allowing customers to improve the safety, utility and go-anywhere ability required for long journeys through Australia's harshest terrain.

Headlining the new range are all-new winch-compatible bullbars available in polished alloy, black steel, and for the first time, body-coloured steel, that provide the ultimate in frontal protection and vehicle integration.

Work on the new LandCruiser's bullbar range began in 2015, with engineers testing the new accessories extensively with a focus on weld strength, environment and temperature testing and regulation compliance.

Designers targeted two main pillars for the new bullbar range - style and functionality - with the latter achieved through a variety of measures.

The approach angle of the bullbar has been improved to 28.5 degrees, while all bars are compatible with the LandCruiser's crash safety systems, parking sensors and multi-terrain monitor.

Steel bullbars use low-carbon automotive-grade steel with a fully welded top frame, and can be had in black, or painted to match the body colour.

Thermal management was a major point of focus in the development of the new bullbar range, due to the placement of the LandCruiser's twin intercoolers on either side of the front bumper.

Integrating large air vents into the bullbars, ensures that fitting a genuine bullbar maintains the engine's cooling and durability performance.

In addition to offering winch compatibility, the new bullbars also combine a bash plate and new recovery points on LandCruiser for the first time.

Customers can now order genuine winch3 fitment through their dealer, using the same unit as seen on the LandCruiser 70 Series and HiLux - a Warnฎ2 unit with additional features to comply with Toyota standards. The winch uses synthetic rope and is easily covered by a flip-up numberplate.

The bash plate is constructed of 5mm high-grade aluminium and offers excellent underbody protection. A fitted Toyota bullbar is required for bash plate installation.

Genuine recovery points3 can also be installed at the front of the vehicle, and due to the new TNGA-F platform strength, without additional front bracing.

Toyota is also offering a genuine lightbar for the 300 Series core grades (GX, GXL, VX, Sahara) that integrates perfectly into a purpose-built slot in the bullbar, giving the front end a clean and tidy look.

The genuine lightbar offers a wide, even spread of light, with 24 LED lights producing 120 watts in a combination of spot and flood beams.

The lightbar has been UV tested to withstand Australia's harsh sun, and now features a breather cap that helps improve water/oil/dust resistance, and reduces the stress on the bar's seals when attempting manoeuvres like water crossings.

Roof rack designs have also been modified for the 300 Series, with significant input from Toyota's Australian design team.

The GX can be fitted with a three-bar rack featuring a new mounting block with fewer components that allows for easier installation, while GXL and above feature roof rails and can fit the newly designed roof tray, also designed in Australia.

Designers tested the new roof tray for wind noise at speeds of up to 180km/h, which can now be had with side rails for the first time.

The familiar array of sports accessories such as bike and ski holders are also available for the new 300 Series range.
