NEW HILUX MODELS FOCUS ON OFF-ROAD ACTION AND URBAN STYLE

**Three new halo HiLux models - Rugged X, Rugged and Rogue**
**Rugged X/Rugged deliver ultimate off-road protection and functionality**
**Rogue styled and equipped for urban adventurers**

Toyota has given its HiLux a serious dose of style, refinement and rugged off-road prowess with the launch of the new 4x4 double cab Rugged X, Rogue and Rugged models.

The three new hero models of Australia's best-selling vehicle have been designed and developed in Australia with support from Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan and Toyota in Thailand.

Toyota Australia's vice president sales and marketing Sean Hanley said the three new halo models have been designed to meet the demands of Australian customers and Australian conditions and build on the "Unbreakable" reputation of HiLux.

"These three new HiLux heroes give customers a bold new choice in the market whether they are looking for a stylish and refined top-end ute for work and play or need enhanced protection, functionality and recovery capability for serious off-roading," Mr Hanley said.

"We know that the average HiLux customer already spends over $2000 on accessories for their vehicles so we looked at what those needs were from both a capability and style perspective and developed a raft of new features for HiLux.

"Designed and developed over a three-year vehicle program, all the new components on these stunning HiLux models are fully integrated and engineered into the core vehicle and covered by the standard factory warranty.

"The Rugged X, Rogue and Rugged are not accessorised special editions, they are fully fledged new HiLux models that our customers demanded and we can be justifiably proud that they were designed and developed here in Australia," he said.

As the new top-of-the-range HiLux fully equipped for off-road adventures straight out the showroom, the Rugged X is priced from $61,690* in manual guise and $63,690* as an automatic.

The style leading automatic-only HiLux Rogue is priced from $61,690*. Blending the best of off-road and on-road protective and functional features, the HiLux SR-based Rugged offers superb value and is priced from $54,990* as a manual with the six-speed automatic option adding $2000*.

With its off-road focus, the Rugged X builds on the SR5 on which it is based with a host of protective, functional and recovery features.

At the front, the winch-compatible heavy-duty steel front bar with integrated bash plate, LED lightbar and driving lights provides effective off-road protection and, together with the new design grille, gives the Rugged X a striking and tough aesthetic.

Further protective and recovery features include a snorkel, purposeful side rock rails that are able to support a fully laden vehicle, front and rear recovery points and a new heavy-duty steel rear bar and integrated tow bar.

The rear tub of the Rugged X has also been designed for functionality with a new steel sports bar that can support a vertical load of 75kg and, with multiple tie down points, secure up to 200kg on the floor of the tub.

Inside, the new Rugged X delivers all the comfort and style of a premium double cab ute, including leather-accented seats.

A new design instrument cluster, metallic black ornamentation and black headlining complete the interior design theme.

The new HiLux Rogue has been designed with a more urban adventurer customer in mind and features redesigned front and rear ends that reflect Toyota's global truck design DNA.

Designed in Australia and developed in conjunction with the Toyota engineering team in Thailand, the HiLux Rogue is a stylish premium HiLux model that will be sold in markets around the world.

The new more vertical front end and outboard driving lights give the vehicle a strong assertive appearance that is complemented by clean lines and a neat rear bumper - all with a contemporary black and grey colour palette.

The tub also gains the same practical and stylish sports bar as all the new HiLux models along with a bespoke hard tonneau cover for added protection and security.

As a premium model, the Rogue also gains the same interior features and trim as the Rugged X.

The new Rugged model is based on the HiLux SR and is aimed at customers who want the extra functionality and features of the Rugged X but with the protection offered by a traditional steel bullbar.

Like the Rugged X, the Rugged also features a snorkel, redesigned grille, side rock rails, sports bar and heavy-duty steel rear bar together recovery points.

All three new HiLux models share the same mechanical specifications as the SR5 or SR models on which they are based and are powered by a proven, strong and efficient 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine.

Driving through a part-time, shift-on-the-fly 4x4 system with a full set of low-range ratios, the engine generates maximum power of 130kW and 450Nm of torque with the optional six-speed automatic transmission or 420Nm when mated to the six-speed manual gearbox.

FORM AND FUNCTION DRIVE NEW HILUX DESIGNS

**HiLux Rugged X, Rogue and Rugged designed in Melbourne**
**Enhanced visual appeal and functional improvements for all models**

The launch of the new Rugged X, Rogue and Rugged HiLux models has shone a spotlight on the exceptional talent of the design team at Toyota Australia.

The team of 35 designers, technicians and fabricators work out of state-of-the-art facilities as part of the 150-strong product planning and development division.

With all design work and prototyping for the three new models done in Melbourne, design manager Peter Elliott said the new HiLux vehicle development program was the most expansive model expansion work the team had undertaken.

"It has been quite a ride, but having the opportunity to essentially create three new HiLux models has been very rewarding," Mr Elliott said.

"With the extensive facilities we have here, we were able to take the project all the way from initial concept sketches to full-size clay and digital models, and then the fabrication of prototype components.

"We are really proud of the end result, both in terms of the extreme off-road focus for the Rugged X and the bold premium Rogue we created for global markets," he said.

While the Rugged X and Rogue are based on the existing HiLux SR5 models, the Melbourne-based studio carried out a comprehensive redesign for both models to fully integrate the new front and rear-end themes, in addition to adding practical and functional features.

Rugged X designed to deliver serious off-road credibility and capability

The brief for Rugged X was to create a top-end HiLux model that was fully equipped for serious off-roading with high levels of ruggedness, authenticity and functionality.

"Starting with the core HiLux, we had an opportunity to redesign a front system that not only worked with the proportions and features of the vehicle but gave it serious off-road credibility in terms of looks and function," Mr Elliott said.

The combined steel front bar, alloy bash plate, lighting elements and recovery points are all fully integrated, delivering the protection, ground clearance and approach and departure angles needed for off-roading.

"There is a lot of upward movement in the overall proportions of the front bar because clearance is everything in a vehicle like this. Together with the new bold grille, it creates a fresh look at the front that has genuine capability written all over it.

"The lighting system, as well as providing exceptional illumination at night, was also designed with off-road environments in mind. Add-on light bars and driving lights can interfere with the vehicle's cooling system or get damaged easily. By integrating the LED lightbar into the bar and positioning the outboard driving lights up high, they are all more protected," he said.

The same level of functional protection is provided by the body-side and wheel-arch mouldings and rock rails.

"The rock rails are the real deal in the sense that they are designed to protect the vehicle when going extreme off-roading and have been engineered to support a fully laden vehicle. We were also able to integrate a side step function to enable users to gain access to higher parts of the vehicle.

"The rear bar, with its crisp metal aesthetic, offers extremely good functionality that combines with the tow bar and the seriously solid recovery points. Again, we were very conscious of the design in terms of the best departure angles."

Refined style for HiLux Rogue provides global appeal

The HiLux Rogue has been designed as a premium recreational ute created with the global market in mind and was developed in conjunction with Toyota's engineering team in Thailand.

Mr Elliott said the concept was to give the whole vehicle a more imposing presence with a premium sports aesthetic.

"Compared with the SR5, we made big changes to the front end as we wanted this to have an alignment with the global Toyota truck DNA. The essential elements of that are the large trapezoidal grille which, together with the outboard foglamps, gives the front end a really strong presence," he said.

"By subtly adjusting the architecture, we also gave the front a much more vertical proportion to further accentuate that strength."

Exterior trim colour changes such as door handles and mirror caps and rear bumper inserts for the HiLux Rogue are all presented in black and dark grey colours replacing the chrome finishes of the SR5 models.

The bold colour palette, bespoke lockable hard tonneau cover, and replacement of the traditional large Toyota decal on the tailgate with subtle branding all give the HiLux Rogue a strong clean appearance.

"What we were aiming for was a more sophisticated visual look but at the same time, the Rogue is still very much a functional recreational ute.

"You can see that in the black sports bar that is fully engineered to carry a load and mounted right down into the base of the tub. That gives it the sort of strength needed to be able to securely tie down a trail bike or mountain bike or whatever other gear you might want to take for an adventurous weekend away."

RUGGED X TAKES HILUX WELL BEYOND THE BEATEN TRACK

** Fully integrated off-road protection and recovery features**
** Premium and comfortable interior**

The new Toyota HiLux Rugged X takes the ute's "Unbreakable" strength and reputation for off-road prowess to a new level with a host of off-road protection, recovery and functional features and a bold new style to match.

All the new features of the Rugged X were developed locally by Toyota's Melbourne-based engineering and design teams specifically for Australia's harsh off-road environment with support from Toyota in Japan and Thailand.

The Rugged X delivers a more aggressive aesthetic and heavy-duty functional features that underpin its distinctive character as the HiLux designed to work hard and play hard.

Toyota Australia's product planning and development general manager, Rod Ferguson said the Rugged X was undeniably aimed at customers with an appetite for off-road adventure.

"There is no doubt about the appeal of the dramatic visual style of the new Rugged X, but it's far more than a styling exercise," Mr Ferguson said.

"Features like the new heavy-duty steel front bar, rock rails and high-strength recovery points have all been developed and fully engineered to completely integrate with the vehicle and are designed to allow owners the ultimate off-road adventure straight out of the showroom."

Based on the popular HiLux SR5 4x4 double-cab, the Rugged X shares its mechanical specifications with that vehicle including its 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine. Offering plenty of performance, the engine generates a maximum power of 130kW and 450Nm with the optional six-speed automatic transmission or 420Nm when mated to the six-speed manual gearbox.

But that is where the similarities end.

New features for ultimate off-road protection and purpose

At the front end, the Rugged X presents a face that epitomises the strength of the HiLux with a large honeycomb grille supported by the all-new winch-compatible steel front bar, complete with a fully integrated LED light bar and spread beam driving lights.

Made from black powder-coated high-tensile pressed and fabricated steel, the new front bar is complemented by a 5mm thick high tensile alloy bash plate that provides superb protection without significant weight compromises.

The new front bar and bash plate structure is fully integrated into the front end design of the Rugged X, ensuring complete compatibility with all safety systems and airbags. The front suspension has also been fitted with uprated springs to support the extra mass.

In order to provide outstanding night vision, the new steel front bar features a centrally mounted 66cm LED light bar - the first time such equipment has been fitted as original equipment in the segment - and two spread-beam outboard LED driving lights.

With 24 individual LEDs producing a combined maximum of 120 watts, the light bar together with the 20 watt driving lights, delivers a significantly broader and brighter spread of light than the standard SR5 high beam.

Located beneath the front bar and integrated into the chassis of the HiLux Rugged X are a pair of easily accessible and easy-to-find red painted recovery points*, that are matched at the rear.

The front and rear recovery points are made from 20mm thick steel plate with a large cross-vehicle bracing structure for strength and are fixed into the chassis rails with high tensile bolts. Both the front and rear recovery points have been tested in a variety of recovery situations and can accommodate an 8000kg snatch strap or 9000lb winch.

At the rear, a new heavy duty steel rear bar with a large step is fully integrated with the tow bar assembly and recovery points and protects the vehicle in off-road conditions thanks to its sheer strength and clever design to improve corner approach angles.

Complete with a standard tow ball, tongue and fully installed 7-pin flat wiring harness, the Rugged X is fully equipped to drive away towing a boat, off-road trailer or caravan with the manual version rated to a braked towing capacity of 3500kg and the automatic rated to 3200kg**.

Further body protection and design appeal in the HiLux Rugged X is provided by the black wheelarch and body side mouldings with the former accommodating newly developed 17" alloy wheels fitted with high profile 265/65 R17 tyres.

Visually tying in the front and rear of the Rugged X is an all-new feature for HiLux, a pair of heavy duty rock rails that take the place of traditional side steps.

Made from chassis-mounted steel tubing that is black powder coated for durability, the rock rails are designed to protect the sills and underbody and are able to support a fully laden vehicle.

They are also fitted with a pair of tread plates to assist getting in and out of the HiLux in slippery conditions.

While many of the new components have been designed and engineered with increased off-road protection in mind, Toyota engineers and designers have also looked to improve functionality, wherever the road or track goes, and this is clearly evident in the large tub.

Protected by a moulded liner, the tub of the HiLux Rugged X is fitted with a sports bar. Unlike many sports bars however, the four-piece steel structure fitted to the Rugged X is for more than just good looks and is a floor-mounted, load-bearing structure that provides multiple tie-down points.

The sports bar is capable of supporting a vertical load of up to 75kg, or securing up to 200kg of camping gear, sports equipment or other essentials for an off-road adventure.

Further functionality comes in the form of the fully fitted snorkel designed specifically for HiLux to ensure optimum airflow to the engine in dusty conditions or when tackling deep river crossings.

The various functional features developed for the new Rugged X not only provide the vehicle with outstanding off-road prowess but also give the HiLux a rugged dynamic aesthetic.

This is further enhanced with a black gloss treatment for the exterior mirror caps and door handles and matte black surrounds for the tail lamps that all create a distinctive stark contrast to the new exclusive Inferno Orange paint colour.

In addition to this bright metallic colour that is only available for Rugged X, Rugged and Rogue HiLux models, the Rugged X is also offered in Glacier White, Crystal Pearl, Silver Sky, Graphite and Eclipse Black exterior colours***.

Premium interior delivers comfort and convenience whatever the conditions

Reflecting the purposeful exterior, the new HiLux Rugged X features an enhanced interior with premium materials and colours designed to offer the optimum balance of style and functionality.

The black leather-accented seats feature a perforated centre section with contrast stitching for a premium feel while the standard front seat heating provides welcome respite on chilly mornings in the outback. The driver seat also offers 8-way power adjustment (slide, recline, height and tilt) with the front passenger position featuring a manually adjustable seat.

Complementing the practical black upholstery is metallic black ornamentation for doors, steering wheel, gear lever and centre console and a black headlining.

The HiLux Rugged X also features a newly-designed Combi Meter instrument cluster incorporating speedometer, tacho and 4.2" multi-information display that features a dark dial plate with orange needles and white illumination.

The vehicle's premium infotainment system functions are displayed on a large 7" display and include full Satellite Navigation^, AM/FM and DAB Radio^^, a single slot CD player, USB/AUX# and Bluetooth connectivity##, voice recognition and the Toyota Linkฐ app suite that is compatible with a range of iPhone and Android smartphones.

To complete the convenience offering, the HiLux Rugged X also comes standard with a Smart Key system enabling keyless entry and start.

HILUX ROGUE DELIVERS URBANE STYLE AND ADVENTUROUS SUBSTANCE

**Top-end HiLux designed in Australia for a global market**
**Refined and sporty exterior style for urban adventurers**
**Premium interior features for added comfort and convenience**

The new Toyota HiLux Rogue delivers a whole new level of style, backed by plenty of proven substance, to the recreational ute market.

The new premium HiLux model combines the best of Toyota off-road capability with a new sophisticated urbane style designed by the Melbourne-based product design team and developed in conjunction with Toyota engineers in Thailand.

Toyota Australia's product planning and development general manager Rod Ferguson said Rogue was the perfect expression of a vehicle designed for adventurous weekends away while being equally at home for the weekday commute into the city.

"Whether it's the snow, a waterski weekend or a bit of high country mountain biking, the Rogue maintains all the HiLux 4x4 credentials to get you there and back," Mr Ferguson said.

"At the same time, the bold new front and rear end design, clean lines and premium interior means that you will be doing it with a new sense of sophisticated style."

HiLux Rogue is based on the HiLux SR5 4x4 double-cab model and is powered by a strong 130kW/450Nm 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

As a new range-leading model, it takes its style and sophistication to an altogether higher level.

Global design DNA for a global product

HiLux Rogue was designed in Australia as a global product to be tailored and sold in various markets around the world. It is the basis for the HiLux Rocco that is available in Thailand.

Over the course of a three-year development process for the Rogue, the local Toyota designers settled on a strong bold theme that reflects Toyota's global truck DNA.

To achieve the new bold look, the front end was completely redesigned with a stronger, more upright profile. A large trapezoidal grille with a honeycomb insert and outboard LED fog lamps help give the Rogue a broad stance and imposing presence on the road.

Surrounding the fog lamps are newly designed bezels finished in a high gloss metallic colour to create a more aggressive aesthetic.

The strength in profile is accentuated with a solid side presence highlighted by gloss black exterior mirror caps and door handles and underpinned by new design black 18-inch alloy wheels fitted with 265/60 R18 tyres.

The newly adopted rear bumper features a larger step and grey-painted inserts to match the front end while a towball and tongue and 7-pin wiring harness are fitted standard to complement the 3200kg braked towing capacity*.

Reflecting the cleaner style of the overall vehicle, the rear end does away with the traditional large HiLux decal with branding detailed by a combination of subtle and stylish decals and badges at the top of the tailgate.

The functional sports bar adds far more than visual appeal and is securely floor-mounted into the Rogue's tub and can support a vertical load of 75kg or secure up to 200kg on the tub floor via multiple tie-down points.

The stylish aesthetic is further enhanced by the bespoke hard tonneau cover that neatly integrates with the new black sports bar adding practical protection and security.

The hard tonneau cover incorporates a light for the tub and is fully integrated with the central locking system.

In keeping with its more upmarket positioning, the Rogue also features a new type of tub liner made from an ultra-durable marine grade material on a soft foam base that has been designed to perfectly fit within the tub.

The polypropylene carpet-like material is UV and water resistant, ensuring long-term durability and easy cleaning.

Premium features and trim are all class

Inside, the Rogue combines a host of premium equipment, trim and design features to lift the ambience and give it a classy feel.

Mirroring the black colour theme of the exterior, the cabin features new black perforated leather-accented seats, metallic black ornamentation for the doors, centre console and shift lever and a black headliner for the roof of the cabin.

The front seats are heated and the driver position also features eight-way power adjustment for slide, recline, height and tilt.

Front and rear carpet floor mats complete the refined interior.

The Rogue features a redesigned instrument cluster with the Combi Meter - speedometer, tacho and 4.2" multi-information display - comprising a dark dial plate with orange needles and white illumination.

The premium infotainment system that displays on a large 7" display includes full Satellite Navigation^, AM/FM and DAB Radio^^, a single slot CD player, USB/AUX# and Bluetooth connectivity##, voice recognition and the Toyota Linkฐ app suite that is compatible with a range of iPhone and Android smartphones.

Added convenience comes in the form of a Smart Key system that allows keyless locking and unlocking and engine start and stop.

HILUX RUGGED BLENDS THE BEST FOR ON AND OFF-ROAD VERSATILITY

**Aussie designed and engineered protection and functional features**
**Full frontal bullbar protection for country driving**
**Hardwearing tub with heavy-duty practical sports bar**

Rugged by name and rugged by nature, the third new HiLux model provides the optimum balance of on and off-road protection and functionality for a variety of conditions and environments.

By combining the full functionality of a traditional bullbar with enhanced protection and recovery features, the Rugged is the perfect 4x4 workhorse or go-anywhere weekend warrior.

Like its new Rugged X stablemate, all the new features for Rugged were designed and engineered by Toyota Australia's product planning and development division to suit harsh country and outback conditions.

Division general manager Rod Ferguson said the Rugged was designed for customers who wanted enhanced off-road capability and protection for a variety of environments.

"Rugged X offers a traditional bullbar for customers who do a lot of country driving while offering new locally developed off-road protection, recovery and functional features," Mr Ferguson said.

The new Rugged shares its mechanical specifications with the HiLux SR and is powered by a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine producing 130kW and 450Nm with the optional six-speed automatic transmission or 420Nm when mated to the six-speed manual gearbox.

At the front, the ute's aggressive styling is dominated by a premium proven steel bullbar that integrates with the Hilux front end and provides full compatibility with all the vehicle's safety systems.

Constructed from high-tensile steel that has been black powder coated for durability, the winch-compatible bullbar incorporates LED driving lights, centre and corner undershields, mounts for two antennas and additional driving lights.

Behind the bullbar the newly styled grille, finished in gloss black, features a bold interlocking honeycomb design that complements the mesh panel in the lower section of the bullbar.

The Rugged is also fitted with additional side body protection with body side mouldings and heavy-duty rock rails to protect the vehicle sills and underbody from damage in extreme off-road situations.

The rock rails are constructed from chassis mounted steel tubing and are designed to support a fully laden vehicle. They also feature plastic tread plates to allow easy access to the roof of the vehicle.

New design black 17-inch wheels give the Rugged a purposeful appearance and are fitted with high profile 265/65 R17 tyres.

At the rear the HiLux Rugged delivers an equally tough aesthetic and functionality with a new heavy-duty steel rear bar. Finished in black powder coat, it features a large step and tow bar, ball and tongue and 7-pin wiring harness to provide a braked towing capacity* of up to 3500kg for the manual version with the automatic rated to 3200kg.

To help get out of extreme situations, the vehicle is also fitted with rear recovery points** that are painted bright red for easy identification and location.

The recovery points are made from 20mm thick steel plate and with a large cross-vehicle bracing structure for additional strength, can accommodate an 8000kg snatch strap or 9000lb winch.

The rear tub of the HiLux Rugged also offers superb functionality with a hard-wearing durable moulded tub liner and an easy-to-operate tailgate handle.

The new black four-piece steel sports bar provides far more than good looks too and is capable of supporting a vertical load of 75kg, or securing up to 200kg in the tub bed via multiple tie-down points.

The HiLux Rugged also comes standard with a fully fitted snorkel to ensure efficient airflow to the engine in dusty conditions or when undertaking water crossings.

Inside, the HiLux Rugged shares its equipment level with the HiLux SR with the addition of satellite navigation^ and DAB+ digital radio^^ for the comprehensive Bluetoothฎ# and USB-equipped## infotainment system.

It also gains heavy-duty all-weather floor mats, front and rear.

NEW HILUX MODELS BENEFIT LOCAL SUPPLIERS

The launch of the new Rugged X, Rogue and Rugged HiLux models has provided new opportunities for local automotive suppliers.

While the base HiLux is built by Toyota in Thailand, all the major new components for the Rugged X and Rugged models and many for the Rogue, are sourced from Australian suppliers and fitted locally at a facility in Port Melbourne.

Toyota Australia's vice president sales and marketing Sean Hanley said various options were explored before deciding to finish the build of the new models in Australia.

"Most of the suppliers for the new components are Australian, and in particular based in Victoria, so it makes sense to finish the vehicles there," Mr Hanley said.

The facility is operated by Toyota's long-term logistics partner Patrick Autocare.

Fitment of all the new components for Rugged X and Rugged models including the heavy-duty steel front and rear bars, bullbar, rock rails, recovery points, and sports bars is done by hand.

As the HiLux Rogue is designed as a global model, it arrives with complete front and rear ends requiring only fitment of the sports bar and hard tonneau cover.

Local suppliers for the new fully integrated components that are certified to full ADR standards include Frontline Australasia (front and rear bars, bullbar and sports bar), Brown & Watson International (Narva lighting products), ARB (rock rails and recovery points) and ERG Group (hard tonneau).

The Rugged X and Rugged models, aimed at serious off-road enthusiasts, have been fully designed, developed and engineered in Australia with full support from Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) in Japan.

The sporty lifestyle-focused Rogue was designed in Australia and developed in conjunction with Toyota's engineering team in Thailand.

All three models are the culmination of a comprehensive three-year vehicle development program. Product planning and development division general manager Rod Ferguson said the program was a superb showcase of the company's capability and expertise.

"The launch of these three new HiLux variants really demonstrates the ability of our design and engineering teams to take a concept right through to the launch of a new production vehicle," Mr Ferguson said.
"With a team of over 150 staff, and design, engineering and product testing and evaluation facilities, we have a high level of capability and expertise that is increasingly being utilised within Toyota's global design and development network.

"Not only do we work on projects for our market here in Australia like the new HiLux variants, our talent is in demand for regional and global products. We are also recognised as a centre of excellence for vehicle evaluation, particularly off-road vehicles."

Development of the new HiLux models began in early 2015, prior to the launch of the current generation HiLux.
The original proposal was for two new 4x4 double-cab halo models to sit above the SR5 variants in the existing HiLux range - a dual strategy to cater to the needs of different customers at the higher end of the market.
Rugged X offers advanced functionality and protection for serious off-roading while Rogue is a stylish lifestyle model with a bold aesthetic appeal and premium comfort and convenience features.

A third model, HiLux Rugged, was developed from the SR grade following feedback from customer clinics.
Toyota conducted clinics with a prototype vehicle around Australia in late 2015 and, following an overwhelmingly positive response, final approval from TMC to proceed with the project was granted in March 2016.

The prototype was so well received that only minor changes were made to create the production version of the Rugged X.

State-of-the-art facilities provide full vehicle development capability

All new components for the Rugged and Rugged X models were designed, developed and engineered by Toyota Australia to ensure full integration with the vehicles and Australian Design Rules compliance.

The product design team operates from a state-of-the-art facility inPort Melbourne. This includes a large styling studio that uses advanced automotive design software with virtual-reality capability. It features dedicated modelling plates and an intricate lighting system that allow careful examination of surfaces and contours.

The design studio is complemented by an electronic visualisation studio with a 6m wall screen that enables further review and manipulation of full size design concepts using CAD models. These can also be shared with other Toyota design studios around the world in real time.

Additional facilities include a prototyping area with two five-axis milling machines for creating clay models up to the size of a LandCruiser, and several 3D printers for producing smaller prototype components. Within the fabrication area, designers are able to work with composites, metals and other advanced materials to create everything from small components through to full-size vehicles.

The design studio also has a full-size spray booth, and an auditorium with a turntable and adjacent outdoor area with a further two turntables to allow vehicles to be viewed in natural light.

A conversions and accessories team has the capability to design, develop and engineer Toyota Genuine accessories. Through collaboration with other Toyota affiliates, it is able to develop accessories for local, regional and global products.

Toyota Australia is also recognised as a centre for excellence for vehicle evaluation, particularly off-road vehicles, and conducts extensive local evaluation and suitability testing for pre-production vehicles.

Testing is largely carried out on public roads across Australia with closed track evaluation at a proving ground near Anglesea in Victoria. More than 650,000km of local testing and development was carried out for the current current-generation HiLux.

For the new HiLux Rugged models, the team carried out bench and rig tests, accelerated durability testing and numerous other programs to test strength and environmental performance.

A connected vehicle services team works with local and global suppliers, business partners and Toyota affiliates to develop in-car entertainment, telematics and connectivity functions for Australian vehicles.

The division incorporates product planning and regulations teams with the latter responsible for managing certification approval for all vehicles. It works with government and industry bodies on future technologies and associated regulatory changes.

Recent concept vehicles and products include the 2016 Revo concept for the Bangkok motor expo that the team designed, developed and built from scratch in just eight weeks.

It also created the stunning design for the 86 Shooting Brake concept in 2016 that was subsequently built by TMC's sports car division in Japan as a fully functional one-off project and lauded by fans and media around the world.
