ALL-NEW COROLLA HATCH SETS SMALL-CAR BENCHMARK

**Bold, distinctive and sporty design**
**Dynamic performance, premium ride comfort**
**Advanced safety and driver support systems**

Toyota's Corolla is set to retain its mantle as Australia's best-selling passenger car with the imminent arrival of a new-generation hatch.

The all-new Corolla hatch sits on an innovative platform that underpins bold exterior styling, an upscale interior, impressive driving dynamics and ride comfort, plus advanced technologies including class-leading safety.

There are three grades and seven variants with hybrid technology now available at each level - Ascent Sport, SX and ZR, in a move expected to result in a substantial uptake in sales of Corolla hybrid.

Toyota Australia's vice-president sales and marketing Sean Hanley said Corolla, more than any other car, had built the reputation of the Japanese automotive industry and the success of Toyota Motor Corporation.

"This all-new Corolla hatch leapfrogs everything in the affordable small-car segment and sets the new benchmark," Mr Hanley said.

"Corolla has become the world's and Australia's best-selling passenger car - and the new Corolla hatch is even better through our commitment to produce more appealing and dynamic cars," he said.

"Many of its ground-breaking technologies and class-leading features would normally be found in more expensive, prestige models."

MORE REWARDING DRIVE

The new hatch's Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform guarantees a more rewarding driving experience with its lower centre of gravity, new multi-link rear suspension, 60 per cent more rigid body and improved weight balance.

New powertrains significantly boost performance and driveability. A new 2.0-litre four-cylinder Toyota Dynamic Force petrol engine delivers 21 per cent more power (125kW) and 15 per cent more torque (200Nm) than its 1.8-litre predecessor while using less fuel*.

A new Direct Shift continuously variable transmission offers a 10-speed sequential shift mode and mechanical launch gear - the first in the world for a passenger-car CVT - to promote brisk yet fuel-efficient off-the-line acceleration.

Corolla's improved hybrid system is lighter and more compact due to advances in engine, electric motor and battery technologies - smaller, lighter and more efficient.

The 1.8-litre Atkinson Cycle petrol engine shares a raft of technical features with the new 2.0-litre engine, including world-leading thermal efficiency of 40 per cent and a 13:1 compression ratio. Combined output is 90kW and fuel economy 4.2 litres/100km*.

A more efficient, lighter and smaller multi-shaft transaxle has been tuned for greater low-down response and driveability. All CVT models feature three driving modes - ECO, Normal and Sport.

A new six-speed intelligent manual transmission is available on Ascent Sport, providing rev-matching control for smoother and more responsive gear shifts.

Across the range, driving characteristics also benefit from an active cornering assist system that applies brake force to the left or right driven wheels during high-speed cornering to supress understeer.

UNPRECEDENTED SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES

All-new Corolla brings unprecedented levels of advanced safety technology to the small car class with the Toyota Safety System. Toyota anticipates a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

A pre-collision safety system incorporates pedestrian detection+, including at night, as well as cyclist detection during the day, autonomous emergency braking and emergency brake assist.

Active cruise control and lane departure alert with steering assist and sway warning are also standard. On CVT models, active cruise operates at all speeds while the lane departure technology is upgraded to lane trace assist, providing steering assistance to ensure the car stays centred in the lane.

Corolla's windscreen-mounted camera recognises speed-limit signs - a first for a Toyota model in Australia.

Other standard safety features include automatic high beam, reversing camera, hill-start assist, seven airbags and two rear ISOFIX child safety seat anchor points. SX and ZR also have blind-spot monitor.

MORE APPEALING STYLING

Corolla is longer, lower and wider than its predecessor - resulting in a more dynamic, prestigious and sophisticated road presence.

The front profile is more vertical with a flatter bonnet flanked by bi-LED headlamps and integrated daytime running lights. At the rear, a lightweight composite hatchback sits between LED rear combination lamps housed in sleek units that emphasise the broad, solid stance of the car.

Corolla's all-new interior design significantly raises sensory quality while delivering an airy, open feel. Improved comfort and greater refinement are accentuated by the unity of colour, gloss and grain for the premium quality trims and surface finishes.

Corolla is also more spacious, thanks to a longer wheelbase and increased body width. A thinner instrument panel contributes to better forward vision and there are new, more comfortable and supportive seats.

NEW POWERTRAINS DELIVER IMPROVED PERFORMANCE AND ECONOMY

** All-new 125kW 2.0-litre direct injection petrol engine **
** Innovative Direct Shift CVT with launch gear **
** New Toyota Hybrid System delivers improved driveability **

Toyota has significantly boosted the performance, driveability and fuel economy of the new Corolla hatch with the introduction of new powertrains including an all-new 2.0-litre direct injection petrol engine and innovative CVT with launch gear.

The new petrol engine and CVT are available on all three Corolla model grades - Ascent Sport, SX and ZR - with the option of a new six-speed manual gearbox for the entry-level Ascent Sport.

Toyota has also expanded the availability of its hybrid drivetrain with a substantially upgraded Toyota Hybrid System now available across the range.

All-new petrol powertrain boosts performance

The new 125kW/200Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder Toyota Dynamic Force petrol engine delivers 21.3 per cent more power and 15.6 per cent more torque than its 1.8-litre predecessor.

At the same time, it offers up to six per cent improvement in fuel economy with a combined cycle fuel consumption of 6.0l/100km for the CVT and 6.3l/100km for the manual with CO2 emissions of 139g/km and 148g/km respectively#.

With a world-leading thermal efficiency of 40 per cent, the new 2.0-litre petrol engine is the first Corolla engine with direct injection and dual VVTi, with VVT-iE (intelligent variable valve timing Electric) on the inlet camshaft, to enhance output and fuel efficiency.

The all-alloy engine is lighter and more compact than the previous 1.8-litre unit while a range of measures to reduce friction have also contributed to the improved fuel efficiency.

The petrol engine in the new Corolla hatch is mated to an innovative new Direct Shift Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that features a "10-speed" sequential shift mode and a launch gear mechanism - a world-first feature in a passenger car CVT.

The launch gear mechanism delivers the high torque required for brisk take off while also enabling engineers to reduce the size and weight of the entire CVT assembly.

The fixed first gear is engaged to provide strong linear acceleration off the line as soon as the driver presses the accelerator pedal. Once the car reaches a certain speed, the transmission automatically shifts to the CVT steel belt pulley system with the launch gear only re-engaged if the car comes to a complete stop.

The CVT offers 10 programmed "shifts" that can be activated by using the steering wheel mounted paddle shifters or moving the transmission lever into manual mode.

To further enhance the driving experience, the CVT features three driving modes - ECO, Normal and Sport.

ECO mode reduces engine load for more economical driving while Sport mode delivers faster throttle response, greater acceleration and improved high-speed performance with the shift control on the CVT maintaining higher engine speeds.

The new CVT also incorporates a series of electronic controls to optimise economy, driving performance, acceleration feel, shift timing and downshifts for engine braking.

In addition to the new CVT, the entry-level Corolla Ascent Sport is also offered with a new six-speed iMT manual gearbox that introduces an advanced electronic rev-matching control.

The iMT system can be activated by a switch on the centre console behind the gear-shift lever and automatically adjusts engine speed to match the gearbox input speed on both upshifts and downshifts to provide a smoother and more responsive gear shifts.

The new gearbox also features a range of internal design improvements to provide enhanced shift feel and reduced noise and vibration.

Substantial upgrade for Toyota Hybrid system offers improved driveability

The new Corolla hatch is available with a substantially upgraded Toyota Hybrid System on all model grades that delivers improved driveability with the optimum balance of performance and fuel economy.

The Toyota system is a full hybrid that uses a combination of a 1.8-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine with a pair of motor generators to provide electric-only drive to the wheels; combined petrol and electric drive; and electricity generation to recharge the battery.

For the new generation Corolla hatch, the Toyota Hybrid System has been derived from the current generation Prius and features a substantially upgraded petrol engine, two new motor generators, new e-CVT transaxle, a new power control unit and new hybrid system battery.

The upgrades to the petrol engine ensures it maintains similar outputs as the previous engine despite being smaller, lighter and more compact.

The petrol engine generates a maximum power of 72kW at 5200rpm and peak torque of 142Nm at 3600rpm while the main electric drive motor produces maximum outputs of 53kW/163Nm.

Combined maximum output for the system is 90kW* with a combined fuel consumption of 4.2l/100km and CO2 emissions of 97g/km#.

The upgraded 1.8-litre engine also shares a raft of technical features with the new 2.0-litre petrol engine, including VVTi, under-square bore and stroke dimensions and a 13.0:1 compression ratio.

In addition to the excellent fuel economy, a variety of modifications to the petrol engine in the hybrid system have further improved combustion, cooling, friction and knock control that contribute to reduced noise and vibration and greater refinement.

Smaller, more efficient electric motors provide a better power-to-weight ratio, the power control unit is smaller, lighter and more efficient and the new Corolla hatch hybrid models also feature a new hybrid system battery that provides greater performance in a lighter package.

The upgrades to the entire drive system together with the new more compact multi-axis e-CVT that features measures to reduce noise and vibration and has been tuned for greater low-down response and driveability, ensure the new Toyota Hybrid System in the Corolla delivers a significantly improved drive experience.

NEW TNGA PLATFORM UNDERPINS FUN-TO-DRIVE ATTITUDE

** Longer wheelbase, stiffer chassis offer more dynamic handling **
** New multi-link rear and substantially upgraded front suspensions **
** Active cornering assist function for vehicle stability control **

The new Corolla hatch delivers a dynamic and vastly improved driving experience underpinned by the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), new suspensions and electronic controls including active cornering assist.

At the front, the MacPherson strut suspension has been substantially upgraded, while the rear features an all-new multi-link system.

With a 10mm lower centre of gravity, improved front-to-rear weight balance, 40mm longer wheelbase and 60 per cent greater torsional rigidity, the TNGA platform has been designed to provide superb handling stability, ride comfort, steering feel and a fun to drive attitude.

A large part of the new-found dynamic driving appeal of the Corolla hatch is due to the all-new rear and revised front suspensions.

At the rear, Toyota has replaced the previous model Corolla hatch's trailing torsion beam and the Corolla hybrid's double-wishbone layout with a sophisticated multi-link suspension with stabiliser bar that features all new mounting, hardware, geometry and calibration.

Forward inclined dampers, bushes for all joint areas of the suspension arms and exclusive design coil springs with upper and lower insulators all contribute to improved ride comfort.

By locating the coil springs as far outboard as possible, Toyota engineers have been able to use smaller springs which together with dampers mounted forward of the axle line, ensures a more compact design allowing for optimum luggage space.

Use of lightweight components including a die-cast aluminium upper support for the dampers further reduces mass adding to the overall high levels of handling stability.

While the front suspension maintains its proven MacPherson strut setup, it has been completely redesigned with mountings, springs, dampers, geometry and steering hardware all having received attention to improve steering response, handling characteristics and ride comfort.

NVH levels also came under the spotlight with friction reduction measures including the application of fluorine coatings and newly developed oils that not only help reduce NVH but also provide enhanced response from the various suspension components.

Apart from the hardware changes, driving characteristics of the new Corolla hatch benefit from electronic assistance with an active cornering assist system standard on all models.

The system uses the actuators and sensors of the vehicle stability control to apply brake force to the left or right driven wheels during high-speed cornering to supress understeer.

The electrically-assisted rack and pinion steering too benefits from the new TNGA platform with a quality feel and response.

Braking performance for the new Corolla hatch is provided by 283mm ventilated discs up front and solid 265mm rear discs with a comprehensive anti-lock braking system.

All models now also feature an electric park brake that for CVT-equipped models is automatically engaged when Park is selected and disengaged when the shift lever is moved to another position.

The park brake can also be controlled via a switch on the centre console and for manual models, is automatically applied when the ignition is turned off.

NEW COROLLA DELIVERS CLASS-LEADING SAFETY FEATURES

** Active cruise control standard across the range **
** Pre-collision safety system with pedestrian and cyclist detection **
** Seven airbags and rear-view camera standard on all models **

The new Corolla hatch brings unprecedented levels of advanced safety technology to the small car class with an array of active driver assistance and passive protection features.

Headlining the features is an active cruise control system that is standard across the entire three-model range of Corolla Ascent Sport, SX and ZR.

The ACC uses a system of cameras and other sensors to maintain a set distance to the car in front with the driver able to set a cruising speed between 30km/h and 180km/h via controls on the steering wheel.

The driver is able to choose from three vehicle-to-vehicle distances and for CVT equipped models, the system operates at all speeds down to a complete stop. For the Ascent Sport fitted with the manual gearbox, the ACC operates at speeds above approximately 30km/h.

All new Corolla hatch models are also fitted with a suite of advanced safety features as part of the Toyota Safety Sense package*.

This includes an active pre-collision safety (PCS) system that incorporates autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection (day and night) and cyclist detection (day only).

Using camera and radar sensors, the PCS is designed to detect vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists and if a potential collision is detected, the system will display a "Brake" message on the multi-information display in the instrument cluster and sound an audible warning.

If the driver heeds the warning and depresses the brake pedal, the PCS system is designed to aid rapid deceleration by applying brake assist to employ increased braking force.

If the driver does not depress the brake pedal and a collision is imminent, the PCS system is designed to automatically apply maximum braking force. It can hold that force for a further two seconds after the car has come to a standstill.

All Corolla hatch models also feature an advanced lane departure warning and support system with multiple functions.

If the car deviates from the lane unintentionally, the lane departure alert (LDA) is designed to sound an audible warning and display a blinking amber visual warning on the multi information display in the instrument cluster.

If further deviation is detected, the visual warning turns green and gentle steering assistance is provided to encourage the driver to move back into the lane.

To help reduce the potential of fatigue-related collisions, the system also includes a sway warning function that displays a warning prompting the driver to take a break if the system detects the car swerving due to driver inattention.

Corolla hatch models equipped with the CVT feature a lane trace assist (LTA) function that works when the ACC is activated.

The lane centring function uses detection of the lane markings as well as the position of the vehicle ahead and then provides steering assistance to ensure the car stays centred in the lane.

It is designed to work on highways and freeways, straight and twisting, but if the driver removes their hands from the steering wheel, they receive visual and audio warnings.

Corolla SX and ZR models are also fitted standard with a blind spot monitor (BSM) that illuminates a visual alert on the outer edge of the exterior mirrors when a vehicle is detected in the blind spot.

The system's radar scans lanes either side of the car up to 60m behind and if a vehicle is detected, lights up a warning if the Corolla's turn signal is off or blinks a warning if the turn signal is on.

To assist with effective night-time illumination, all Corolla models are fitted with automatic high beam that switches between low and high beam lighting according to ambient light conditions.

The system is operable at speeds of more than 30km/h and will cancel high beam if it detects street lights, headlights of oncoming vehicles, taillights of a vehicle in front, or vehicle speed falls below 25km/h.

Further driver assistance is offered by the road sign assist (RSA) system that recognises speed limit signs and displays them on the multi information display in the instrument cluster.

If the ACC is active, the display will also alert the driver via up or down arrows adjacent to the speed display to either increase or decrease the speed of the car.

Speed limit sign information, along with other vital vehicle information is also available in a head-up display that projects information onto the windscreen in front of the driver and is standard on Corolla hatch ZR.

All Corolla hatch models are fitted standard with a rear-view camera with guidelines that is displayed in the large 8-inch screen in the centre console.

All models are also fitted standard with seven SRS airbags - dual front, front side, side curtain and driver kneebag - and two rear ISOFIX child safety seat anchor points.
