ALL-NEW RAV4 RAISES THE BAR FOR SUV STYLE AND SUBSTANCE

** RAV4 offers 11 variants with new petrol and hybrid system powertrains **
** Mechanical and hybrid electric AWD systems deliver off-road capability **
** Class-leading safety and driver assistance technologies **

The all-new Toyota RAV4 has raised the bar for SUV performance, safety, technology, style and refinement.

Just as the first-generation RAV4 was a breakthrough when it was launched in 1994, the fifth-generation model is a revolutionary vehicle delivering a raft of innovations including being the first Toyota hybrid SUV for the Australian market.

With the option of 2WD, or mechanical or electric AWD systems, and a choice of two new petrol engines or the powerful and efficient Toyota Hybrid System, the new RAV4 continues to drive Toyota's spirit of adventure.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales and Marketing, Sean Hanley said the stylish new RAV4 took the SUV essence to a new level.

"With class leading safety features, distinctive and dynamic styling, a spacious and flexible premium interior, and agile driving characteristics, the all-new RAV4 delivers outstanding passenger car-like refinement, handling and ride comfort," Mr Hanley said.

"As the first hybrid RAV4 for Australia, it will help drive our ongoing push to offer customers proven technology that delivers strong performance, outstanding fuel consumption and low levels of CO2 emissions.

"Toyota has consistently offered its groundbreaking hybrid powertrains in a variety of models since it was first introduced to Australia in the Prius 18 years ago and this latest generation technology is ideally suited to the new RAV4.

"At the same time, the RAV4's all-new powertrains and off-tarmac capability and performance, provided by innovative mechanical and electric all-wheel drive systems, make it the ideal SUV whether your journey takes you across town or out of the city for an active weekend away," he said.

The new RAV4 is available in a choice of 11 variants across four grades with three powertrains - two petrol and the petrol-electric Toyota Hybrid System - and the option of front-wheel drive (2WD) or all-wheel drive (AWD).

Priced from $30,6401, the lineup kicks off with 2WD petrol variants available in GX, mid-range GXL and top-of the-line Cruiser grades.

These are all powered by a new 127kW/203Nm 2.0-litre, direct injection, four-cylinder engine that drives through an innovative continuously variable transmission (CVT) with a launch gear mechanism.

GX variants are also offered with the option of an intelligent six-speed manual gearbox with a rev-matching function.

The new RAV4 further extends the availability of the powerful and efficient hybrid system within the broader Toyota range with six RAV4 hybrid variants offered in 2WD and AWD versions across the GX, GXL and Cruiser grades.

The hybrid system combines a 2.5-litre Atkinson cycle four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor generator that drives through a CVT, providing the most powerful drivetrain in the range with combined maximum outputs of 160kW for 2WD variants and 163kW for AWD versions.

It is also the most efficient with a combined cycle fuel consumption of just 4.7 litres/100km2 for 2WD variants and 4.8 litres/100km2 for AWD versions.

RAV4 hybrid electric AWD variants gain an additional rear motor generator to provide power to the rear axle for the innovative electric AWD system. Complete with a Trail mode, it enables up to 80 per cent of the total drive torque to be delivered through the rear wheels.

Topping the new RAV4 range is the adventure-focussed Edge AWD variant powered by a new 152kW/243Nm 2.5-litre petrol engine that drives through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Edge variant uses a mechanical AWD system that is able to deliver a front/rear torque split of between 100 per cent to the front wheels and an even 50:50 split across front and rear wheels.

A dynamic torque vectoring system can also independently control the amount of drive torque delivered to the left or right rear wheels depending on the road surface conditions.

The AWD system in the Edge grade also features a multi-terrain select system that offers different modes for mud & sand, rock & dirt and snow environments.

Complementing its off-tarmac capability is a more rugged style with unique front and side body enhancements and interior treatments and trim.

All new RAV4 variants provide a much sharper, bolder and stronger visual appeal with dynamic styling and 17-inch,18-inch and 19-inch alloy wheels that give the vehicles a solid and planted presence on the road.

Underpinning the slightly shorter, lower and wider body is the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform that features a 30mm longer wheelbase and wider track, that has been extended by between 25mm and 55mm.

This, together with a revised front MacPherson strut and new multilink rear suspension, gives the new RAV4 substantially improved driving dynamics and superb ride comfort, both on and off the tarmac.

A high level of refinement is evident in the larger cabin with premium materials and a stylish and functional design.

All-new comfortable and supportive seats are finished in cloth, leather-accented or imitation leather "Softex" material, depending on the grade.

For comfort and convenience, all variants except the entry-level GX petrol 2WD feature dual-zone climate control and keyless smart start.

The advanced multimedia system with steering wheel controls incorporates full Bluetooth®3 connectivity, AM/FM/DAB+4 radio, satellite navigation5 and voice recognition with all information displayed on a large 8-inch touchscreen.

The rear load space has been extended by 65mm offering an increase in luggage capacity of up to a class-leading 580 litres compared with the previous model and features a clever two-level reversible floor for added functionality (not available with full-size spare wheel option).

The new RAV4 offers class-leading safety with the standard Toyota Safety Sense suite of features, including active cruise control, pre-collision safety system with autonomous emergency braking, lane departure alert, road-sign assist (speed sign only) and auto high beam.

Seven airbags, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitor, rear-cross traffic alert, reversing camera, and ABS with vehicle stability control and active cornering assist, further add to the new RAV4's impressive safety credentials.

ALL-NEW RAV4 OFFERS ADVENTUROUS FORM TO MATCH ITS FUNCTION

** RAV4 is lower and wider with higher ground clearance than previous model **
** Stronger, bolder styling reflects off-tarmac capability and on-road refinement **
** TNGA platform allows for longer wheelbase and more dynamic visual presence **

The all-new RAV4 delivers distinctly adventurous styling and highly functional packaging designed to fully reflect its improved off-tarmac capability and on-road refinement.

Sharper, stronger and more refined, the new fifth-generation RAV4 is built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, allowing the SUV's designers the freedom to not only deliver significantly improved driving characteristics, but a completely new and imposing visual presence.

Compared with its predecessor, the new RAV4's roofline is up to 30mm lower and its body is 10mm wider on a wider track that has been extended by up to 35mm at the front and up to 55mm at the rear depending on the variant.

Ground clearance1 has also been lifted to 195mm for petrol variants and 190mm for hybrid versions to take it further off the tarmac.

Sitting on a 30mm longer wheelbase of 2690mm, GX, GXL and Cruiser variants are all 5mm shorter (4600mm) overall than the previous model with rear overhang shortened by 30mm.

A more vertical face with clearly defined upper and lower trapezoidal grilles and slimline LED headlights provides a bold and firmly planted front end that sweeps into the flatter bonnet, that has been lowered by 10mm at the cowl.

In profile, the gently rising beltline, hatch-top spoiler and sharply-raked tailgate glass give the new RAV4 a dynamic appearance, aided by 17-inch, 18-inch and 19-inch alloy wheels, depending on the variant.

At the rear, dual tailpipes, slim LED taillights, a bold lower tailgate and integrated rear skid plate further strengthen the aesthetic appeal of the new RAV4.

Taking the adventure theme even further is the Edge grade that features a more rugged visage with bespoke front bumper, grille, foglight surrounds, front skid plate and wheelarch mouldings.

The design of the glasshouse has a practical aspect as well with improved visibility in a number of areas. Thanks to the lower, flatter bonnet, and relocation of the exterior side mirrors onto the door panels, forward visibility is improved.

Rear passengers also benefit from a rear quarter window that has been flipped compared with the current model. With a wider section at the base rather than the top, it neatly integrates with the sharply raked rear glass, providing a more dynamic look.

The GXL and Cruiser RAV4 variants are available in a choice of eight solid, pearl, metallic and mica paint finishes2 including Glacier White, Crystal Pearl3, Silver Sky3, Graphite3, Eclipse Black3, Atomic Rush Red3, Eclectic Blue3 and Saturn Blue3.

The entry-level GX shares this palette with the exception of the Crystal Pearl3 finish while the Edge is offered in five colours including a bespoke Jungle Khaki3, along with Graphite3, Eclipse Black3, Atomic Rush Red3 and Eclectic Blue3.

MORE INTERIOR SPACE, STYLE AND REFINEMENT FOR ALL-NEW RAV4

** More interior space with versatile luggage area extended by 65mm **
** Premium soft-touch materials and stylish design offer refined ambience **
** Extensive list of standard features for comfort and convenience **

The all-new RAV4 offers a more spacious, premium and refined interior with an extensive list of standard features, making it a perfect escape whether the journey takes you across the city or off on a weekend away.

Thanks to the longer wheelbase and wider track of the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, the new RAV4 provides substantially more interior space than the previous generation.

Spacing between the driver and front passenger has been expanded by 40mm, the rear footwell has increased by 49mm, and the rear luggage space has been lengthened by 65mm to a class-leading 1015mm.

As well as being longer, the luggage space is also wider by a minimum of 50mm, providing a class-leading capacity of up to 580 litres - an increase of 33 litres compared with the previous model.

Although the roof height has been lowered by up to 30mm, by lowering the hip point of the front seats by 15mm, the RAV4 designers have maintained superb headroom for both front and rear passengers.

Big glass areas courtesy of the lower bonnet cowl, beltline and redesigned rear quarter window give the interior an open, airy ambience while premium materials, soft-touch padded surfaces and a slimline instrument panel provide a refined, contemporary aesthetic.

RAV4 Cruiser and Edge grades feature leather-accented door trim with Cruiser variants also gaining blue LED ambient lighting, further adding to the premium interior.

To distinguish the Edge grade and reflect its rugged exterior styling, it gains orange door and instrument panel trim highlights1.

Design focus delivers improved ergonomics and sightlines
The stylish new dash comprising instrument cluster, a large 8-inch touchscreen display, and open storage trays has been designed to improve sightlines and provide easy visual access to all information.

In GX and GXL RAV4 variants, the instrument cluster incorporates a speedometer, and tachometer for petrol variants or power meter for hybrid versions, with a central 4.2-inch Multi-Information Display (MID) providing vehicle, audio and navigation information.

The higher-grade Cruiser and Edge variants combine a large central 7-inch MID with digital tachometer or power meter, and fuel/temperature gauges on either side. The large central display offers the driver a choice of either analogue or digital speedo displays along with other operating information.

The new interior design also offers improved ergonomics with all controls falling easily to hand.

A new three-spoke steering wheel - leather-accented for GXL, Cruiser and Edge grades - features switches for all cruise control, audio, vehicle and infotainment functions.

The steering wheel controls can be used to manage a variety of information that is displayed on the multimedia touchscreen that is neatly integrated into the centre console at the top of the dash.

All variants in the new RAV4 range offer five seats that have been completely redesigned with new cushioning and springs to offer better support and comfort.

The rear seat features a 60/40-split folding seatback with two recline positions and a large fold-down centre armrest with integrated cupholders.

In GX variants, the seats are finished in a hard-wearing fabric with GXL versions using a premium embossed fabric. A step up into the Cruiser adds leather-accented upholstery with dual-setting, heated front seats and 10-way electric adjustment with two-position memory for the driver's seat.

The seats in the adventure-focussed Edge grade are upholstered in a synthetic leather-look "Softex" material with three-level heating and cooling function for the front seats and 10-way electric operation for the driver's seat.

Spacious and flexible storage and load space for all needs
With a fully folding rear seatback, the new RAV4 offers a hugely versatile cabin and load space that is not only wider and longer than the previous model, but also offers a two-height deckboard for the floor (not available with full-size spare wheel option).

In the upper position it creates a flat surface that aligns with the folded rear seatback while the lower position drops the floor by 55mm, to store tall luggage upright and further increase luggage space.

The deckboard is also reversible with carpet on one side and a hard-wearing resin finish on the other, to reduce any potential damage when carrying wet or dirty objects in the load space.

The tailgate features two grab handles for easy closing with Cruiser and Edge variants offering electric opening and closing operation.

In addition to the large rear luggage space, the new RAV4 also features a variety of storage areas. These include an overhead sunglass pocket, large front and rear door bins with 700ml bottle holders, two front cupholders and a lidded box in the centre console.

The all-new RAV4 is very well equipped for comfort and convenience with dual-zone climate control (except the entry-level GX petrol model that has manual air conditioning) with rear air vents, front 12V DC and rear 120V AC accessory power sockets and four fast charging USB power ports (GXL, Cruiser and Edge).

Easy access is assured with a keyless smart entry and start for GXL, Cruiser and Edge variants. GX hybrid variants feature remote entry and smart start with remote entry and keyed start for the GX petrol version.

A new advanced multimedia system is standard on all variants and features AM/FM/DAB+ radio2, USB and Aux inputs, full Bluetooth®3 connectivity, voice recognition, and Toyota Link4 apps including weather, fuel finder5 and travel times.

A number of functions have been improved with voice recognition now offering a broader range of commands along with the addition of new functions including Siri®6 eyes-free mode for compatible iPhones®6 and Miracast™7, which can allow smartphone screens to be duplicated onto the touchscreen.

The new RAV4 also comes standard with satellite navigation2 with SUNA™ live traffic alerts.8

All variants bar the GX also feature a wireless phone charger9 located in front of the transmission lever.

The GX and GXL grades offer a six-speaker audio system with Cruiser and Edge variants featuring a premium nine-speaker JBL®7 system with a subwoofer and eight-channel amplifier.

TOYOTA RAV4 OFFERS CLASS-LEADING SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES

** Active cruise control, pre-collision safety system standard on every model **
** Toyota Safety Sense features offer advanced driver assistance**
** Seven airbags and rear-view camera standard on all models **

The all-new Toyota RAV4 offers class-leading safety across the entire range with its suite of Toyota Safety Sense technologies and other active and passive safety features providing high levels of driver assistance and occupant protection.

In the RAV4, Toyota Safety Sense incorporates active cruise control (ACC); pre-collision safety system (PCS) with pedestrian detection (day and night) and cyclist detection (day only); lane departure alert; road sign assist (speed sign only); and automatic high beam.

All variants bar the entry-level GX petrol 2WD manual version benefit from an all-speed ACC1 that operates down to a complete stop. In the RAV4 GX fitted with the manual gearbox, the ACC operates at speeds above approximately 40km/h1.

The all-speed ACC system also includes a lane trace assist function to provide assistance through the steering system when the ACC is activated and help the vehicle stay centred in the lane1.

The lane trace assist is designed to work on highways and freeways, straight and slight bends, but if the driver removes their hands from the steering wheel, they receive visual and audio warnings1.

Using camera and radar sensors, the PCS is designed to detect vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists and assist the driver to avoid a potential collision. Initially it provides a visual and audible warning alert, followed by braking assistance or autonomous emergency braking if the driver fails to heed the warning1.

The lane departure alert function will warn the driver if the system detects that the car has deviated from its lane with visual and audible alerts and if necessary, provide steering assistance. To help reduce the potential for fatigue-related collisions, the system also includes a sway warning function1.

All RAV4 models also feature a road sign assist system that is able to recognise speed limit signs and display them on the Multi-Information Display (MID) in the instrument cluster1.

Other advanced safety technologies standard across the range include blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert and front and rear parking sensors.

A reversing camera displays images on the 8-inch touchscreen and provides fixed guidelines on GX variants and variable parking position guides on GXL versions and above1.

Cruiser and Edge grades also feature a panoramic view monitor that enables the driver to check all surroundings - side, front and rear narrow and wide views, and top view - depending on whether the transmission is in park, drive/neutral or reverse1.

Providing the optimum occupant protection, the RAV4 is fitted with seven airbags - driver and passenger front and side, full length side curtain and driver kneebag - and offers ISOFIX child safety seat anchor points for two outer seats in the rear.

ALL-NEW DRIVETRAINS FOR RAV4 DELIVER REFINED PERFORMANCE

** First hybrid system for RAV4 in Australia with 160kW 2WD and 163kW AWD **
** Petrol 152kW 2.5-litre engine with 8-speed auto, exclusive to new Edge grade **
** New 127kW 2.0-litre petrol engine and CVT with launch gear for RAV4 2WD **

The new RAV4 features three all-new powertrain options that deliver the optimal balance of performance, refinement and efficiency across the 11-variant range.

Hybrid for all road environments
Headlining the new powertrains is the Toyota Hybrid System - offered for the first time in RAV4 in Australia.

The most powerful of the three new drivetrains, the system is available in six variants across GX, GXL and Cruiser grades with a choice of 2WD or AWD.

At the heart of the petrol-electric full hybrid system is a new 2.5-litre petrol engine that combines a high compression ratio of 14:1, long stroke, D-4S direct and port fuel injection, high tumble cylinder heads, intelligent dual variable valve timing, and Atkinson cycle operation to provide an outstanding combination of performance and efficiency.

Total combined maximum power output of the system is 160kW at 5700rpm for 2WD versions and 163kW at 5700rpm for AWD variants, making it the strongest powertrain in the new RAV4 lineup. The petrol engine alone delivers a peak torque of 221Nm between 3600rpm and 5200rpm.

At the same time, the RAV4 hybrid remains the most efficient in the range with a combined cycle fuel consumption of 4.7l/100km1 for 2WD variants and 4.8l/100km1 for versions fitted with the electric AWD system. CO2 emissions are 107g/km2 and 109g/km2 respectively.

For 2WD hybrid variants, the system combines the new petrol engine with a pair of motor generators to provide electric-only drive or combined petrol and electric drive to the front wheels, and electricity generation to recharge the battery.

The RAV4's hybrid system is a development of the same system in the Toyota Camry and features compact and efficient motor generators and power control unit and a high-performance nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery.

Drive to the front wheels is via a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with Drive Mode Select buttons offering Eco, Normal and Sport modes.

The system automatically adjusts vehicle controls - steering assist, brake and throttle control, shift pattern and drive torque distribution - according to the drive mode selected.

An additional EV mode allows the RAV4 hybrid to run on electric power only at a limited speed for a short distance.

RAV4 hybrid AWD models gain a third motor generator that drives the rear axle enabling the hybrid system to deliver up to 80 per cent of the available torque to the rear wheels, providing sure-footed performance on slippery or loose surfaces.

A sophisticated AWD Integrated Management (AIM) system controls engine, transmission, steering, torque distribution and brakes to provide high levels of on-road handling and off-road performance.

Like the 2WD models, Drive Mode Select offers Eco, Normal, Sport and EV modes with an additional Trail mode.

In off-road environments, the Trail mode applies braking force to a slipping or freely rotating wheel, enabling the drive torque to be automatically directed to the grounded wheels or those with the most traction.

Taking petrol performance to the Edge
As a single standalone variant, the new RAV4 Edge is available exclusively with a new "Dynamic Force" 2.5-litre petrol engine, mechanical AWD system and new eight-speed automatic transmission.

Sharing the intelligent dual variable valve timing and D-4S direct and port fuel injection with the hybrid 2.5-litre engine, with a slightly lower 13:1 compression ratio, the petrol engine generates a maximum power of 152kW at 6600rpm and peak torque of 243Nm from 4000-5000rpm.

This represents a 20kW/10Nm increase in power and torque compared with the previous 2.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol RAV4 while combined cycle fuel consumption has been cut by a substantial 14 per cent or 1.2l/100km1 to 7.3l/100km1.

The petrol engine is mated to a new eight-speed automatic transmission that offers a much broader gear range. Compared with the previous model's six-speed transmission, it delivers improved fuel efficiency, better low-speed responsiveness and reduced noise, vibration and harshness at higher cruising speeds.

Driving all four wheels is a mechanical AWD system controlled by the AWD Integrated Management (AIM) that delivers a front/rear torque split of between 100 per cent to the front wheels and an even 50:50 split across front and rear wheels, according to driving conditions.

A dynamic torque vectoring system provides further control of torque distribution both on and off-road with independent right and left couplings on the rear axle providing differing levels of drive torque distribution to the rear wheels.

The AIM system can also disconnect power to the rear wheels when AWD is not needed, to help improve fuel efficiency.

In order to provide optimal AWD operation in varying terrain, the Edge grade features a Multi Terrain Select system in addition to the Drive Mode Select.

The Multi Terrain Select system offers different settings for mud & sand, rock & dirt and snow environments that adapts throttle and brake control, torque distribution, and shift patterns for different surfaces to provide great traction.

New 2.0-litre petrol engine offers 2WD urban efficiency
The third powertrain offered in the all-new RAV4 is a new "Dynamic Force" 2.0-litre petrol engine that generates maximum outputs of 127kW at 6600rpm and 203Nm at 4800rpm - an increase of 20kW and 16Nm compared with the previous RAV4 2.0-litre engine.

Running a 13:1 compression ratio with dual variable valve timing and combined direct and port fuel injection, the new lightweight engine is also substantially more fuel efficient with a combined fuel consumption of 6.8l/100km1 for the manual variant and 6.5l/100km1 for CVT-equipped versions.

This represents a reduction of up to 12 per cent in fuel consumption with the manual RAV4 falling by 0.9l/100km1 and the CVT by 0.5l/100km1, with comparable falls in CO2 emissions to 155g/km2 and 147g/km2 respectively.

The 2.0-litre petrol engine is offered in the three front-wheel drive GX, GXL and Cruiser grades with the GX available with a new six-speed manual gearbox or new CVT.

The new manual gearbox has been designed to deliver fuel efficiency and smooth operation and features an intelligent mode switch that offers a rev-matching control for even smoother and more responsive gear shift changes.

Both GXL and Cruiser 2WD 2.0-litre RAV4 variants feature a new CVT as standard.

This new CVT debuted in the Corolla hatch and incorporates an innovative launch gear mechanism to deliver the high torque required for brisk take off.

The fixed first gear is engaged to provide strong linear acceleration off the line as soon as the driver presses the accelerator pedal. Once the RAV4 reaches a speed of between 10km/h and 60km/h, the transmission automatically shifts to the CVT steel belt pulley system.

When decelerating gradually or under brakes, the launch gear will re-engage automatically under 7km/h. It may also be re-engaged under heavy acceleration if the car is travelling at less than 40km/h.

All three 2WD variants, including the manual version of the GX, also feature Drive Mode Select with Eco, Normal and Sport modes.

NEW RAV4 TNGA PLATFORM DELIVERS A DYNAMIC DRIVE EXPERIENCE

** Longer wheelbase and stiffer chassis offer more dynamic handling **
** New multilink rear and substantially upgraded front suspension **
** Active cornering assist function for vehicle stability control **

The all-new RAV4 delivers a vastly improved driving experience with more dynamic handling and superb ride comfort, both on and off the tarmac.

Underpinned by the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), it sits on a wheelbase that has been extended by 30mm to 2690mm. It has also been widened at the front by up to 35mm and up to 55mm at the rear, depending on the grade, providing a superbly stable and secure platform.

At the same time, the use of lightweight high-strength steel in the upper body and lowering the engine position has contributed to a centre of gravity that is lower than the previous model. Relocating the fuel tank to a lateral position in front of the rear axle further improves balance, handling and ride comfort.

At the front, the MacPherson strut suspension has been substantially upgraded, with new components and revised geometry enhancing straight-line stability and steering sensitivity.

At the rear, Toyota has developed a new sophisticated multilink suspension with stabiliser bar that features new mounting positions, hardware, geometry and calibration.

Repositioning of the dampers and trailing arms in particular, has contributed to significantly improved shock absorption on all road surfaces to provide outstanding ride comfort.

Apart from the hardware changes, driving characteristics of the new RAV4 benefit from electronic assistance with an active cornering assist system standard on all variants.

The system uses the actuators and sensors of the vehicle stability control to apply brake force to the left or right wheels during high-speed cornering to supress understeer.

The electrically-assisted rack and pinion steering also benefits from the new TNGA platform with a quality feel and response.

The diameter of the steering column has been increased to improve rigidity and enhance steering feel while the electric assist motor has been moved from the column to the rack, thereby contributing to the overall lower centre of gravity, to provide the RAV4 with greater agility and balance.

Effective braking performance for the new RAV4 is provided by 305mm ventilated discs up front and solid 281mm rear discs with a comprehensive anti-lock braking system incorporating brake assist, brake hold function and vehicle stability control.

The brake pedal height and angle have been optimised to provide a high level of control while a variable pedal ratio and responsive brake booster for petrol variants ensures superb brake feel. RAV4 hybrid versions use an electronically-controlled brake system.

All new RAV4 variants feature an electric park brake that is automatically released when the accelerator pedal is depressed.

For CVT-equipped variants, it is automatically engaged and released depending on the shift lever position while for the RAV4 GX manual version, the park brake is automatically applied when the ignition is switched off.

TOYOTA RAV4 PIONEER NOW THE WORLD'S BEST-SELLING SUV

** Annual global RAV4 sales top 800,000 making it the world's best-selling SUV **
** Over 300,000 RAV4s sold in Australia since originally launched in 1994 **
** Four generations of RAV4 bought by more than 8.5 million customers globally **

In 1994, Toyota launched the original RAV4 (Recreational Active Vehicle 4-wheel drive).

A small three-door SUV, it was designed to blend passenger car-like refinement and driving characteristics with the ability to go off the tarmac courtesy of a raised ride height and all-wheel drive.

The original RAV4 was built on a unique monocoque platform - compared to traditional 4WDs that used a ladder frame chassis - to deliver car-like refinement and was powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. In addition to the three-door version, a larger five-door and small three-door convertible were also available.

The appeal of its versatility quickly took hold and following the launch of the larger, more sophisticated second generation in 2001, Toyota was selling more than 10,000 RAV4s a year, making it the best-selling SUV in the Australian market for 2001.

Through two more generations launched in 2006 and 2013, the RAV4 grew in size, model range and popular appeal with the option of front or all-wheel drive and additional engine choices including 3.5-litre V6 petrol and 2.2-litre turbodiesel powerplants.

With the entire SUV segment rapidly growing in Australia to the point where, in 2018, SUVs outsold passenger cars by more than 100,000 units commanding 43 per cent of the entire new vehicle market, the Toyota RAV4 has remained among the most popular.

In 2018, Toyota sold 22,165 units of the fourth generation RAV4 taking its total Australian sales since the launch of the original SUV to more than 300,000.

Globally, total sales for the model exceed 8.5 million with more than 800,000 now being bought each year making it the world's best-selling SUV.

AUSSIE ENGINEERING LEADS EXTENSIVE RANGE OF ACCESSORIES

** Locally designed and manufactured side steps for RAV4 global market **
** Large range of accessories for active lifestyle and vehicle protection **
** Toyota Genuine Accessories covered by full factory warranty1 **

Toyota is offering an extensive range of genuine accessories for the all-new RAV4 enabling customers to tailor their vehicle to suit their lifestyle, use or needs.

Many accessories have been developed specifically for the new RAV4 with several having been designed and engineered in Australia by Toyota's product planning & development division's (PP&D) conversion & accessories team, and its local suppliers.

The stylish, lightweight and functional side steps, available for all models, were designed and engineered by PP&D and are being manufactured in Victoria for the global market.

As well as being available in Australia, the new locally-developed RAV4 side steps will be also be exported to Europe and the US, with the latter being one of the biggest markets for side steps with annual sales of about 9000 units.

Toyota Australia won the right to produce the aluminium side steps for the global market after developing a design that requires almost no welding and does not need to be painted, making them lightweight, functional and stylish.

Working together with local suppliers, it was also able to leverage their expertise to ensure manufacturing costs were minimised, helping secure the export potential.

Other new RAV4 accessories that were designed by the strong team of designers and engineers at Toyota's Port Melbourne studio include a tow bar, front nudge bar and internal metal cargo barrier that is unique to the Australian market.

In addition to the locally developed accessories, Toyota also offers a vast range of other genuine accessories for the RAV4 to help protect the vehicle and enhance functionality and style.

For the exterior, these include alloy wheels, bonnet protector, headlight covers, mudguards and slimline weathershields.

Inside, personalisation and protection options include fabric seat covers, carpet or all-weather rubber floor mats, rubber cargo mat, cargo net, a rear scuff guard, and dash camera.

For those with an active lifestyle, the new RAV4 is also available with roof racks (except GX) and specific carriers for bikes, kayaks or skis and snowboards.

Toyota Australia spends about $12 million a year on design and engineering of new accessories for all vehicles to ensure they are fully integrated and meet the high-quality standards of the vehicle they are designed for.

All RAV4 Toyota Genuine Accessories purchased and fitted to a RAV4 by a Toyota dealer are warranted for the vehicle's new car warranty or 24 months, whichever is greater1.

TOYOTA LAUNCHES APPLE CARPLAY®1/ANDROID®2 AUTO IN NEW RAV4

** RAV4 first Australian Toyota to feature Apple CarPlay® and Android® Auto as standard **
** Available from late 2019 with no-cost retro-fit offered on new-generation RAV4 **
** Will also be available on select models including Camry and Corolla hatch **

The all-new Toyota RAV4 will be the first vehicle in the company's Australian lineup to feature Apple CarPlay® and Android® Auto compatibility as a standard feature of its latest generation multimedia system.

Available for retro-fit from the fourth quarter of this year, the two systems will give owners easy access to their smartphone apps directly through the vehicle's multimedia system.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales and Marketing Sean Hanley said the introduction of Apple CarPlay® and Android® Auto would add further convenience and functionality to the already sophisticated multimedia system.

"We know that today's customers want to be able to access their smartphone apps anywhere, anytime and these systems offer a safe and convenient means of doing that directly through the advanced in-vehicle multimedia system," Mr Hanley said.

"For RAV4, we are offering the added functionality of Apple CarPlay® and Android® Auto at no extra cost," he said.

All RAV4s delivered from the fourth quarter 2019 will have the feature already installed. Customers taking delivery of their new-generation RAV4 before that time will require a quick visit to the local dealership to have it installed at no additional cost.

Apple CarPlay® and Android® Auto will be rolled out progressively as a standard feature across select Toyota models from the fourth quarter of 2019 onwards. It will also be available for retro-fit via a simple dealer service for a number of current generation models including Camry and Corolla hatch. More details will be provided later in the year.
