TOYOTA LAUNCHES 201KW RAV V6


Toyota has launched the 201kW RAV V6 that it expects to attract first-time buyers to the RAV4 brand and reinforce the company's leadership of the Compact SUV market.

New RAV V6 is powered by a 3.5-litre all-alloy quad-cam engine with dual variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) - the most powerful naturally aspirated engine offered by Toyota in Australia.

The 201kW Toyota RAV V6 is the most powerful model in the Compact SUV market.

The acclaimed Toyota 2GR-FE engine also powers Aurion, Tarago V6 and Kluger.

The launch of three new RAV V6 models brings to nine the overall variants in the RAV4 line-up, all equipped with VVT-i engines and active AWD.

The three new quad-cam V6 models - CV6, SX6 and ZR6 - all have five-speed transmissions.

Towing capacity has increased by 400kg to 1900kg, compared with four-cylinder RAV4 models.

"The launch of RAV V6 is the most significant step for the RAV4 brand since its launch in Australia 13 years ago," said Toyota Australia's senior executive director sales and marketing, David Buttner.

"Since 1994, RAV4 has evolved to be larger, better equipped, with more passive and active safety, and increased performance.

"The addition of the class-leading 201kW V6 models significantly alters the dynamic of RAV4 and the profile of people who buy it.

"Compact SUV buyers who have had a connection to RAV4 styling and Toyota brand values but wanted extra performance now have that option available with the RAV V6.

"RAV V6 will help retain existing RAV4 owners and attract new buyers for the first time."

Compact SUV is the fastest-growing segment in the SUV market, with sales increasing 19.1 per cent for the nine months to September 2007.

The proportion of six-cylinder sales compared to four-cylinder sales in the Compact SUV market peaked at 29 per cent in 2001, and steadily declined to 16 per cent in 2006.

"While sales in the four-cylinder segment have been strong, the six-cylinder segment hasn't shown the same growth in recent years," Mr Buttner said.

"The introduction of RAV V6 will help reverse the trend in the six-cylinder market by attracting a different type of buyer to the already popular RAV4 brand."

EXPANDED RAV RANGE HAS NINE MODELS


The launch of three new RAV V6 models brings the overall Toyota RAV range to nine models, all with VVT-i equipped engines and active AWD.

The three new models are the quad-cam V6 CV6, SX6 and ZR6 - all with five-speed automatic transmission.

They join six 2.4-litre RAV4 models - CV, Cruiser and Cruiser L - with the choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

The new V6 models have higher specifications than their four-cylinder equivalents.

All V6 models have six SRS airbags as standard equipment.

All have active all-wheel drive, ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with steering assist, Traction Control (TRC), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Assist Control (DAC).

Exterior V6 model differentiation includes darkened headlamps and a chromed radiator grille with V6 badge.

All RAV V6 models have electric power-assisted steering, factory air conditioning with dust filter, tilt and telescopic steering column adjustment, rear heater ducts under the front seats, cruise control, power mirrors, power windows, 17-inch wheels, dual headlamps with projector-type low beam, body-coloured rear spoiler, six-speaker MP3-compatible audio, steering wheel-mounted controls, three rear-seat head restraints, external temperature gauge, LED-type tail lamps, centre high-mount stop lamp, and auto-off headlamps.

RAV V6 SX6 has the additional features, over CV6 grade, of push-button front dual-zone climate control air conditioning, six-CD multi-changer (in lieu of single CD), leather-bound steering wheel, high-grade seat fabric, leather accented gear knob, privacy glass, five-spoke alloy wheels, front foglamps, overfender flares and roof rails.

Top-of-the-range ZR6 has the additional features, over SX6 grade, of leather accented seat trim, leather door trim inserts, power driver's seat adjustment and power lumbar adjustment, heated driver's and front passenger's seats, and satellite navigation with built-in four-CD changer.

RAV V6 ENTRY LEVEL UNDER $40,000


The point of entry to new Toyota RAV V6 has been kept under $40,000.

The RAV CV6 has a recommended retail price of $39,990*, while RAV SX6 is priced at an RRP of $43,990*.

Top-of-the-line ZR6 has an RRP of $49,990*.

Pricing for the six four-cylinder RAV4 models remains unchanged, starting at an RRP of $31,990* for the CV manual, with the Cruiser L automatic set at an RRP of $43,990*.

The new V6 models have higher standard specifications than their four-cylinder equivalents.

"Keeping the entry-level price of RAV V6 under $40,000 was a major objective," said Toyota Australia's senior executive director sales and marketing, David Buttner.

"Given the extensive list of standard equipment on the CV6, it represents excellent value on a performance and feature basis.

"Buyers in the six-cylinder Compact SUV market expect high standard equipment levels, and the RAV V6 models meet or exceed those expectations at three price points."

NEW RAV V6 BROADENS APPEAL


Toyota RAV V6 will appeal to a wider range of buyers in the Compact SUV market.
Younger families, couples and people with an active lifestyle will find favour with the new V6-powered vehicle.

"The RAV4 has generated a very loyal following over the years," said David Buttner, Toyota's senior executive director sales and marketing.

"Its more recent upgrades have been designed to keep pace with changes and trends in the SUV market while retaining core RAV4 brand values.

"The SUV market is demanding more space and storage, better performance, improved efficiencies, greater safety, better value - and more choice."

Compact SUV buyers are primarily active urban singles in their twenties and thirties and couples who lead busy active lives - and both like SUVs for their versatility.

Part of RAV4's success has been its appeal to female drivers who like its looks, ease of use and reliability.

Toyota says RAV V6's class-leading power of 201kW will attract even more male buyers to the RAV brand, and those in the user-chooser market.

"The power and torque generated by the 2GR-FE V6 engine places RAV V6 in the sports SUV category," Mr Buttner said.

"Its extra towing capacity will appeal to anyone who may not have previously considered a RAV4 to do the job.

"In addition to attracting first-time buyers to RAV4, the RAV V6 will also help reconnect previous RAV4 owners who always wanted a significant step up in performance.

"Close analysis demonstrates that the SUV market is becoming more segmented by demographics and lifestyle choices.

RAV V6 NEXT STEP IN COMPLETING TOYOTA SUV RANGE


The launch of Toyota RAV V6 is the penultimate step in Toyota Australia's regeneration of its SUV range over the past two years.

Only LandCruiser 200 is now to be launched.

Since 2005, Toyota has launched entire new line-ups or released new models and significant upgrades across its entire SUV range.

Current RAV4 was launched in February 2006, and was followed by the release of the Toyota Prado powered by a new 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine in November 2006.

All-new Toyota Kluger, including its new 2WD variants, was launched in August 2007.

The replacement to the venerable LandCruiser 100 Series will be unveiled in November 2007.

Toyota currently leads two of three SUV market segments in which it competes.

Toyota says the development of new model variants is vital to meet the demands of a fast-changing market.

"Toyota has achieved its position of leadership in the SUV market by carefully tracking customer needs and expectations and factoring them into its product development strategies," said Toyota Australia's senior executive director sales and marketing, David Buttner.

RAV4 heads the national Compact SUV segment, claiming 15.9 per cent of the market to September 2007.

"By anticipating as much as meeting the expectations of the market, Toyota has been able to maintain and in some cases grow its market share position, which is a primary measure of customer satisfaction," said Mr Buttner.

Toyota LandCruiser dominated the Large SUV segment with 59.1 per cent of the market to September 2007.

"The introduction of RAV V6 is part of this dynamic growth process, and the launch of LC200 at the other end of the SUV scale will complete Toyota's regeneration cycle for now," said Mr Buttner.

"Our SUV line-up heading into 2008 will consolidate our areas of strength and take advantage of the opportunities to which our research of the SUV market has alerted us."

Due to its 6.8 per cent sales growth to September 2007, LandCruiser Prado is closing in on the market leader in the Medium SUV segment with 19.6 per cent market share.

When sales of Kluger are factored in, Toyota is the top-selling brand in the Medium SUV segment in 2007.

ACCESSORIES FOR NEW RAV V6


Toyota Australia's sales data on the fitment rate of Toyota Genuine Accessories on previous RAV4 models places the humble Carpet Floor Mat at the top of the list at 46 per cent.
"New RAV V6 offers both front and rear Carpet Floor Mats, one of the most practical accessories offered under the Toyota Genuine brand," said Matthew Callachor, divisional manager, Toyota Customer Service Division.

"Tailored to fit firmly and woven from premium quality nylon, RAV4-branded floor mats will help protect the floor from everyday dirt and wear and tear."

The driver's mat also features two retaining clips to reduce mat movement.

Toyota has produced two stylish airbag-compatible nudge bars to help protect RAV V6's front bodywork from minor dings and scratches.

Toyota says its accessories sales figures indicate that more than one in three RAV V6s sold will be fitted with a nudge bar.

The Toyota genuine Deluxe Alloy Nudge Bar is made of premium quality extruded polished aluminium and features integrated polyurethane overriders incorporating the RAV4 logo.

The Deluxe nudge bar has an integrated underguard, providing additional protection from damage by stone chips and projections.

Toyota also offers a standard polished aluminium nudge bar without the underguard and overriders.

Both Deluxe and Standard nudge bars can be fitted with driving lights.

With new RAV V6's powerful engine, the vehicle can tow a heavier load and the towbar capacity has been upgraded accordingly.

The maximum towing capacity for RAV V6's Toyota Genuine Towbar is now 1900 kilograms (braked) and 750 kg (unbraked) with a 190kg maximum download*.

Significantly, 30 per cent of owners of previous RAV4 models have had a towbar fitted, a simple addition that increases the versatility of the vehicle.

Other exterior accessories available for RAV V6 include side steps, front mud guards, a bonnet protector, headlamp covers and front weather shields.

It can also be fitted with satellite navigation and audio upgrades.

A new fixed price standard schedule service plan gives new RAV V6 owners the opportunity to maintain the performance and operational levels of the vehicle at a competitive price.

Toyota's Service Advantage Plan offers new RAV V6 owners up to six standard scheduled services for just $150 each at authorised Toyota Service Centres.

The offer is available for up to the first six standard schedule services within the first three years or 60,000km (whichever occurs first), up to and including the 60,000-kilometre service. Toyota RAV V6's recommended service intervals are 10,000km**.

V6 ENGINE REWRITES PERFORMANCE AND ECONOMY EQUATION


Toyota's new RAV V6 combines impressive performance and fuel efficiency.
It uses Toyota's all-alloy, dual-VVT-i equipped quad-cam 2GR-FE engine - the most powerful naturally aspirated engine Toyota offers in Australia.

The Toyota 2GR-FE engine is also offered in Australia in Aurion, Tarago V6 and Kluger.

The advanced 3.5-litre V6 engine delivers 201kW of power at 6200rpm and 333Nm of torque at 4700rpm in RAV V6 - using regular unleaded petrol (ULP).

It has 76kW more power than 2.4-litre RAV4.

It is matched in RAV V6 to a five-speed intelligent automatic transmission and active all-wheel drive.

ADVANCED V6 ENGINE FOR RAV4


RAV V6 has a 3.5-litre all-alloy quad-cam V6 engine with dual variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i).

Toyota developed dual-VVT-i technology to improve performance and fuel efficiency with lower emissions.

The 2GR-FE engine also has an intelligent electronic throttle (ETCS-i).

The Toyota dual-VVT-i system provides optimum inlet and exhaust valve timing across the range of engine operating conditions.

The dual-VVT-i system boosts torque in the low-to-medium and high engine speed ranges.

It also optimises the valve overlap period, according to engine and driving conditions, to increase cylinder filling at high rpm.

The 2GR-FE engine also has roller rockers, an electronic Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS), Direct Ignition System (DIS) and a lightweight cast-aluminium cylinder block.

Toyota designed the 60-degree V6 for a combination of high performance, fuel efficiency, package efficiency and reliability, coupled with minimal weight and noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), and low emissions.

The engine has an oversquare bore-and-stroke relationship of 94.0mm by 83.0mm for a swept capacity of 3456 cubic centimetres.

Compression ratio is 10.8:1 for optimum power and economy across the engine revolution range.

The 24-valve 2GR-FE engine has Siamese inlet ports to reduce the overall surface area of the port walls, wall wetting and hydrocarbon emissions.

The combustion pentroof chamber design is based on a narrow included valve angle to create a compact combustion chamber shape.

The cylinder head and piston crown design have taper-squish areas around the circumference of the combustion chamber and piston crown.

Toyota engineers have adopted roller rockers (with maintenance-free valve clearance adjusters) to reduce friction and optimise fuel economy.

The Toyota 2GR-FE engine has electronic control for the ACIS, based on information on engine revolutions and throttle position.

The ACIS varies the effective length of the inlet runners to make maximum use of the inlet pulsation effect for increased breathing efficiency.

It creates a long manifold effect to boost power in the medium engine speed range under high load.

At all other times it creates a short intake runner effect to boost output across the revolution range.

The stainless-steel exhaust manifold has a built-in three-way catalyst. This design accelerates the warm-up of the catalyst immediately after start-up, in turn reducing exhaust emissions.

Toyota has maximised reliability and serviceability by adopting chain camshaft drive, maintenance-free valve clearance adjusters, a replaceable element oil filter, direct ignition, electronic engine control and an air/fuel ratio sensor.

RAV V6's new engine has a service weight of 163kg.

RAV V6 HAS INTELLIGENT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION


Toyota's new RAV V6 has a five-speed intelligent automatic transmission.

The electronic control unit for the Toyota U151F transmission can deduce if the vehicle is travelling up or down a hill and hold gears accordingly to provide better acceleration uphill and to increase engine braking downhill.

It can also deduce - using information on vehicle speed, throttle opening angle and accelerator pedal angle - the optimal shift points to suit the manner of driving.

The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) will introduce torque converter lock-up earlier if the vehicle is cruising.

Features of RAV V6's transmission include a super-flow torque converter.

Toyota designers minimised lag and shift time in the U151F transmission, all with minimal shift shock.

The transmission has high-precision hydraulics, advanced solenoid valves and new electronics, for maximum shift quality.

RAV V6's five-speed transmission has ratios of: 1st, 4.235; 2nd, 2.360; 3rd, 1.517; 4th, 1.047; 5th, 0.756 and reverse, 3.378.

It is matched to a 3.080:1 final drive ratio.

CHASSIS PACKAGE HAS THE LOT


Toyota RAV V6's chassis package offers high levels of safety, ride, handling, stability and low noise.

All three RAV V6 models feature active AWD, electric power-assisted steering, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with steering assist, traction control, ABS anti-skid brakes with Brake Assist (BA) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD).

RAV V6's chassis dynamics begin with the vehicle's body rigidity and large footprint on the road for its overall dimensions.

It has a 2660mm wheelbase and front and rear track of 1560mm.

RAV V6 has a substantial front cross-member to maximise front suspension rigidity, while a pair of body braces on the rear suspension member ensure rear suspension rigidity.

RAV V6 has a long-travel, all-coil suspension package with MacPherson struts at the front and trailing-type double-wishbone rear suspension.

The suspension has a range of advanced features, including multi-leaf linear control damper valves at front and rear.

These damper units provide linear (more consistent) damping force characteristics across the full range of piston velocities.

Linear low-speed damping characteristics improve body control and hence ride comfort, while providing a flat ride posture.

It also improves response to driving manoeuvres by smoothing the vehicle's response to steering input.

Optimum medium-to-high-speed damping force has improved the ability of the suspension to absorb road shock.

RAV V6's dampers are filled with low-pressure nitrogen gas, which provides consistent damper performance in all driving conditions.

A viscoelastic oil seal at the top of the damper body, coupled with improved hydraulic fluid in the damper unit, enable the damper to generate damping force at ultra-low damper velocities, thereby improving body control, road holding and steering feel.

Front suspension

RAV V6's front suspension consists of MacPherson struts, with wide-based L-shaped lower arms to maximise suspension rigidity and provide crisp steering response.

Ball joints attach the stabiliser bar directly to the strut body to reduce uncontrolled body roll.

Toyota has paid added attention to the stabiliser bar bushings for increased roll rigidity.

Barrel-shaped coil springs are used to improve ride comfort.

The springs are conical at both ends and offset relative to the damper body, reducing lateral force on the damper unit and also reducing stiction (sticking friction).

In addition, the front suspension units have a rebound stopper with a soft initial characteristic, which improves ride comfort.

RAV's V6's closed cross-section front lower arm design provides light weight (to reduce unsprung weight) and high rigidity.

The bushings for the lower arm are designed to maximise ride comfort and steering response.

Toyota has paid special attention to the kingpin axis to provide excellent stability under braking.

Static front wheel camber has been optimised to ensure maximum tread width on the road during cornering.

The front caster angle has been optimised to achieve the desired steering trail for a balance of high and low-speed straight-line stability, and high-speed steering response.

Rear suspension

RAV V6's trailing-type double-wishbone rear suspension was designed for a combination of ride comfort, driving stability and package efficiency.

The barrel-shaped coil springs have been located low under the body and the dampers positioned diagonally, minimising intrusion into the cabin space and hence increasing cargo space.

The trailing arm, upper arm and lower number two arm are all stamped from high-strength steel, providing high rigidity while minimising unsprung weight.

Special attention was paid to the rear suspension bushings, to provide suspension rigidity coupled with ride comfort.

RAV V6's rear suspension geometry was designed to optimise driving stability and ride comfort, and to increase rolling rigidity for greater vehicle stability.

Electric Power-assisted Steering

RAV V6 has electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering (EPS).

The EPS is part of RAV V6's Vehicle Control Management System (VCMS).

It can provide steering assist control in understeer and oversteer situations, as well as when accelerating or braking on split-mu surfaces.

EPS saves fuel and eliminates the need for hydraulic oil in the steering system.

It therefore offers better economy and environmental benefits.

The system - powered by an efficient direct-current electric motor - reduces engine load and hence fuel consumption compared to hydraulic power assistance.

The electric motor consumes energy only when power assistance is required - so it saves energy when driving in a straight line.

EPS also reduces service costs and improves reliability and environmental friendliness by eliminating the need for a hydraulic pump, hydraulic pipes, vane pump, pulleys and belt, and power-steering fluid.

Electronic control of the power-assisted steering allows the chassis engineers to tune the steering feel to individual market tastes.

RAV V6 has 2.8 turns lock-to-lock and a steering-gear ratio of 14.4:1, for a combination of crisp response and excellent steering feel.

The vehicle has a turning circle of 10.6 metres.

The steering column has tilt adjustment over a 30mm range on all models.

RAV V6 DELIVERS ON POWER-TO-WEIGHT AND TOWING CAPACITY


Toyota's new RAV V6 delivers significantly increased power-to-weight and towing capacity.

Its power-to-weight ratio has been improved by 54 per cent and towing capacity by 26 per cent in comparison with the four-cylinder RAV4.

The quad-cam V6 engine increases RAV4's power-to-weight ratio from 78.6kW/tonne in four-cylinder automatic models to 121.4kW/tonne.

Towing capacity has been increased by 400kg to 1900kg^, compared with four-cylinder RAV4 models.

New RAV V6 has ADR81/01 fuel economy of 10.5 litres per 100km*, compared with 9.6 litres per 100km* for the four-cylinder RAV4 automatic.

RAV V6 HAS COMPREHENSIVE ACTIVE SAFETY PACKAGE


Toyota's new RAV V6 has a comprehensive package of active safety features, including Vehicle Control Management System (VCMS) as standard equipment on all grades.

RAV V6's driving aid package includes control of steering and the all-wheel-drive system as well as Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRC) and the ABS anti-skid braking system.

VCMS is part of Toyota's Driver Assist Technology (DAT) package.

It uses high-speed Control Area Network (CAN) computer technology to seamlessly combine previously separate technologies, provide the best possible traction in any situation and increase active safety.

The key technologies it combines are Active AWD, Electric Power-assisted Steering (EPS) and ABS, including Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA).

The VCMS system allows the Active AWD system to interact with the electronic throttle, the ABS and the electric steering system.

RAV V6's VCMS also includes VSC, TRC, Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Assist Control (DAC).

VSC is a skid-control function which provides optimal traction in cornering to complement the way in which ABS provides optimal traction and stability under braking, while TRC provides optimal stability under acceleration.

VSC dampens strong understeer (loss of front-wheel grip) or oversteer (loss of rear-wheel grip) to ensure vehicle stability.

The VCMS package also has a Cooperative Control function that allows the stability control system to interact with both the EPS and Active AWD systems.

When operating conditions demand, the Cooperative Control function can use the EPS to provide steering assistance to the driver and use the Active AWD system to control the front/rear torque split.

The Cooperative Control function also works in conjunction with the ABS and TRC systems.

It can provide steering torque assist to maintain vehicle stability when braking or accelerating on slippery surfaces and is especially useful where the level of grip varies between the right and left-hand wheels.

Toyota developed VCMS as part of its philosophy of providing the greatest possible range of active safety technology.

The VCMS allows the skid control ECU, engine ECU, EPS ECU, all-wheel-drive ECU and the main body ECU to interact.

The sensors used in the VCMS system include the wheel speed sensors for all four wheels, a throttle position sensor, steering angle sensor and a combined deceleration sensor.

The deceleration sensor, located under the front passenger seat, can detect deceleration in both the longitudinal and lateral directions.

RAV V6 has a combined deceleration and yaw-rate sensor, which in addition to measuring lateral and longitudinal deceleration can measure the angular velocity of the vehicle's rotation around the perpendicular axis.

RAV V6's VSC system can identify an understeer situation by analysing the vehicle's rate of yaw, which is a factor of the steering wheel angle and vehicle speed.

By analysing the actual vehicle speed and steering wheel input, the computer can identify the correct curve or line the vehicle should be travelling along, which is called the target yaw rate.

The yaw sensor on the other hand analyses the actual yaw rate or line of travel. If the actual yaw rate is different to the target rate, the VSC ECU recognises a potential understeer situation and reacts accordingly, reducing throttle opening and so reducing engine revs and speed.

Depending on the degree of understeer, the system also applies the front brakes and inner rear brake in varying degrees to help turn the vehicle safely into the corner.

The steering torque control can operate in either of two ways in an understeer situation.

It can apply steering torque assist to inform the driver of the front-wheel skid or it can prevent the driver from excessively turning the steering wheel.

In the second scenario, the steering assist increases the steering resistance to counter the driver's (excessive) steering angle.

If the VSC system detects an oversteer situation, it controls the engine output and (depending on the extent of the tendency) applies the brakes on the outside front and rear wheels.

This generates an inertial moment in the vehicle's outward direction and hence helps dampen its tendency to oversteer.

The steering torque control can assist the recovery, if required, by providing counter-steer assistance to correct the rear-wheel skid.

The stability control function assumes priority over ABS and TRC.

Toyota designed VSC as a driver's aid and a beeping noise is heard in the cabin when the VSC is activated.

The system works most dramatically and effectively in snow, but will also work in wet and dry conditions too.

RAV V6's active safety equipment also includes audio controls on the steering wheel, LED tail lamps and centre high-mount stop lamp, dual-pocket headlamps with projector-type low beam lamps, and front fog lamps (on SX6 and ZR6).

RAV V6 HAS SIX SRS AIRBAGS


Toyota's new RAV V6 has six SRS airbags as standard equipment.

All three V6 model grades have dual-stage driver and front passenger SRS airbags, front-seat side airbags and side curtain-shield airbags.

The dual-stage driver's SRS airbag system has a seat slide position sensor, so the airbag SRS electronic control unit can determine the rate of deployment.

The front passenger seat has an occupant sensor to control deployment of the front passenger's SRS airbag.

RAV V6's passive safety foundation is its body structure.

The underbody is designed to minimise cabin deformation in front, side and rear collisions.

Specially designed front members act as a crumple zone and 'ride down' frontal collision impact energy, lessening potential injuries in the event of an accident.

High-tensile-strength steel is used to press the bonnet, doors, front fenders, main front chassis members, main floor cross members, the entire front door surround and key sections of the rear door surround - to provide maximum strength versus acceptable weight.

Key passive safety features of the body design include a front bumper reinforcement, under-floor reinforcements, dash-panel reinforcements, floor tunnel reinforcements, and reinforcements in the rocker panels, front pillars and door inners.

The floor has an additional member, between the under-member and the floor tunnel, to further dissipate front-end collision energy.

The dash panel has a cross-member that is joined to the front side-member, to help reduce the deformation of the rearward end of the front side-member in a frontal collision.

RAV V6's side impact protection strategy includes the use of high-strength steel sheet in the centre pillar and the roof reinforcement, as well as a triple-layer structure for the centre pillar outer section.

The rocker panels have an interior bulkhead, designed to transmit side impact energy to the floor cross-member.

RAV V6's body structure includes reinforcement on the rear floor side member, to control rear-end deformation in a rear-end collision.

RAV V6 also has impact protection measures for occupants, including energy-absorbing material in the door trims, to reduce impact to the chest and abdominal areas in the event of a side collision.

In addition, it has head impact protection (HIP) energy-absorbing materials in the pillars and roof side rails.

RAV V6's passive safety equipment additionally includes height adjustable front seatbelt upper anchorages and three-point emergency locking retractor seatbelts in all three rear-seating positions. Automatic locking retractors are provided on the outboard rear seating positions.

RAV V6 HAS ACTIVE ALL-WHEEL DRIVE


New Toyota RAV V6 has Active All-Wheel Drive for enhanced control and improved fuel economy.

Toyota's Active AWD is a compact, lightweight, high-performance AWD system that controls torque distribution between the front and rear axles, using an electromagnetic coupling in the rear differential housing.

The electronically controlled Active AWD system saves engine power and fuel by only driving the front wheels in most road situations.

It switches automatically to all-wheel drive when needed, for example if a loss of front-wheel traction is anticipated.

The system controls torque split based on information on the vehicle's longitudinal and lateral acceleration, steering wheel angle, throttle position, accelerator pedal angle, engine revolutions, and the relative speeds of the four wheels.

The driver can also manually override the system at speeds up to 40km/h, simply by pushing the AWD LOCK button to achieve maximum AWD performance.

The AWD system's electronic control unit (ECU) networks with other key onboard ECUs, using the high-speed Control Area Network (CAN).

This constantly monitors vehicle traction using information from the ABS system wheel speed sensors, deceleration sensor, engine ECU, steering wheel angle sensor, AWD LOCK switch and yaw-rate sensor.

Technically, the Active AWD system controls the percentage of torque delivered to the rear wheels by varying the electric amperage to the electro-magnetic solenoid in the electric control coupling.

The solenoid in turn controls a wet, multi-plate-type clutch.

In addition to the LOCK function, RAV4's Active AWD has an AUTO mode, for optimum take-off and acceleration performance, and smoother cornering.

The AUTO mode increases torque distribution to the rear wheels during fast straight-line acceleration.

It also reduces torque flow to the rear wheels during tight cornering (to prevent the tight-corner braking phenomenon) and when the vehicle is cruising.

The Cooperative Control function in the Vehicle Control Management System (VCMS) can use the Active AWD system to control the front/rear torque split if required.

For example, sudden acceleration of any vehicle during cornering can cause a drive wheel to spin, which in turn could cause the front or rear wheels to skid, resulting in a loss of control.

If the AWD ECU detects front-wheel skid under acceleration, it automatically distributes more torque to the rear wheels.

In the event of rear-wheel skid under acceleration, the system reduces torque distribution to the rear wheels allowing the skid to be more easily corrected.

The underbody treatment includes spats to direct air around the tyres, thereby reducing drag and increasing stability.

VERSATILITY IS THE KEY FOR ALL RAV4 MODELS


Toyota RAV4's interior was designed for a balance of sportiness and spaciousness, within the vehicle's overall dimensions.

The vehicle has a couple distance (from front-seat hip point to rear-seat hip point) of 865mm and cargo space (with the rear seats in their normal position) of 540 litres.

It has 991mm of cargo area height, 942mm of cargo area length and 1335mm of cargo area width.

Utility of luggage space includes a 90-litre under-floor storage box under a bi-fold rear deck board.

A tonneau cover conceals the cargo area if required.

There is also a multi-purpose net to meet various storage needs, which can be stored in the storage box. The deck sides have luggage hooks.

RAV4's centre console includes a console box and an accessory holder.

The distance between the rear wheel wells is 1100mm, to optimise luggage space.

RAV4's 60:40 split rear seat can slide forward, tilt down on one side or tilt down on both sides, using a one-touch remote release function.

The rear seat also has one-touch remote release for super tilt down, allowing the seat to be folded flat to the height of the deck. This helps create a large, flat deck to carry extra cargo.

There is a bottle holder in each of the four doors, as well as twin cupholders in the front console and in the rear seat armrest.
