2017 Toyota Camry Press Kit



Toyota's all-new Camry sedan, launched today, has undergone a dramatic redesign from bumper to bumper that results in a premium, high-quality car focused on performance and technology.

The latest Camry is built on a new platform that underpins more emotional styling, new powertrains with higher power and better fuel economy, a revamped chassis that sharpens driving dynamics and advanced new safety technologies.

Eighth-generation Camry represents a new era for Toyota in Australia - the first time in 30 years that Toyota has offered a fully imported Camry range to the Australian market. The new model is produced in Japan.

Camry is the first sedan to adopt Toyota's New Global Architecture (TNGA), which has transformed the way Toyota vehicles are designed, engineered and packaged.

TNGA enables greater freedom in design, resulting in a more athletic profile with a lower roof and bonnet, a better driving position and improved dynamics due to its lower centre of gravity and greater torsional rigidity.

Two new powertrains are offered - a redesigned hybrid system with a new direct-injection four-cylinder engine that delivers more power, flexibility and efficiency and a stunning new V6 engine with direct-injection technology and an eight-speed transmission.

There are a raft of Camry firsts: direct fuel-injection engines, fully independent rear suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, drive mode select, LED head lamps, an electric parking brake, 10-inch head-up display and a segment-first opening panoramic roof, plus across-the-board adoption of active cruise control and a pre-collision safety system with autonomous emergency braking^^.

Toyota's senior divisional manager sales and marketing Sean Hanley said the new range represents the largest generational change for Camry since the nameplate was introduced in 1983.

"All-new Camry builds on the car's proven reputation for quality, durability, reliability, space, comfort and safety while injecting greater visual appeal and a fun driving experience with rapid acceleration and crisp handling," Mr Hanley said.

"Sharp pricing adds remarkable value to an all-new Camry that looks great while offering an unprecedented level of driving enjoyment and improved fuel economy," he said.

"New Camry has all the ingredients to continue as Australia's best-selling mid-size car, a position it has held for the past 23 years in a row."

Toyota has adopted new grade names: Ascent and Ascent Sport (4-cylinder petrol or hybrid), SX (4-cylinder or V6) and SL (all three powertrains).

Prices have been reduced for six of the nine new Camry variants while increases on the other three are outweighed by additional features.

For the new hybrid powertrain, with combined power output rising to 160kW, prices have been improved compared with the petrol variants and the market.

Camry SX and SL with the new 224kW, 362Nm V6 engine are just $4,000 more than their four-cylinder siblings.

Camry comes with Toyota Service Advantage at just $195 for up to the first five services - now with 12-month intervals**.


Camry's new engines, transmissions and chassis developments are all representative technologies that have evolved through TNGA.

The new hybrid system offers enhanced handling and driving performance as well as outstanding fuel efficiency - 4.5 litres/100km on the SL and 4.2 litres on the other grades, improvements of between 13.5 and more than 19 per cent^.

At its core is a new 2.5-litre, four-cylinder Dynamic Force Engine, which offers 11 per cent more power and four per cent more torque with thermal efficiency among the best engines in the world.

Innovations include VVT-iE variable valve timing. The "E" means it uses an electric motor instead of oil pressure to control variable valve timing for increased fuel efficiency with cleaner exhaust emissions.

To enhance the sporty driving experience, the CVT gives the driver access to six quick-shifting ratios for manual-like gear changes using paddle shifters on the SL or with the console-mounted shift lever.

TNGA packaging has allowed the nickel-metal hydride battery to be moved from the boot area to under the rear seat, improving boot space and positioning battery weight lower in the car.

A lighter and more compact power control unit now sits directly above the transaxle, lowering the vehicle's centre of mass and enabling a lower bonnet.

The hybrid gains a new SPORT drive mode, along with the previous NORMAL, ECO and EV modes, delivering improved acceleration response relative to pedal input.

It also features a new Auto Glide Control system that promotes smooth and efficient coasting that helps improve fuel economy.


Performance and efficiency are also hallmarks of Camry's newly-developed 3.5-litre direct-injection V6, which provides a formidable low-end and mid-range punch.

Its exceptional power output is up to 12 per cent above the previous 3.5-litre V6 while its efficient compression ratio helps it achieve even better fuel efficiency of 8.7 litres/100km (SL, 8.9 litres/100km for SX), an improvement of up to 6.5 per cent^.

The V6's specially developed new VVT-iW variable valve timing system - the "W" is for "wide" adjustment range - operates on the intake to ensure high torque production at all engine speeds.

In addition to the Otto Cycle, the engine uses the Atkinson cycle where appropriate to enhance fuel economy.

Mated to the V6 is a new direct-shift, eight-speed automatic transmission with direct lock-up from second to eighth gears, sequential shifting and auto-blipping downshift control.

Camry is also offered with the proven 2.5-litre petrol four, with a more sophisticated six-speed transmission that incorporates auto-blipping on the downshifts.


Camry's underpinnings have also gone through generational change, delivering an unprecedented level of driving enjoyment through dynamic and spirited handling capability.

The MacPherson strut front suspension has been redesigned, remounted and given new geometry - for improved handling stability, grip and ride quality.

The new rear suspension, with separate spring and damper units, maximises luggage space and optimises stability. The geometry is all new and, combined with the calibration of the various bushings, delivers both impressive stability and high levels of ride comfort.

For the new electric power steering, the motor is now mounted on the rack housing, to help lower the vehicle's centre of gravity. The steering column is now at a more natural angle for the driver with tilt and telescopic adjustment on all variants.

The brakes have also been improved with greater power, feel and longevity thanks to larger front and rear rotors.

Camry now has an electric parking brake plus a brake-hold function that maintains the brake fluid pressure without requiring the driver to stay on the brake pedal or apply the parking brake.

Leading-edge safety technology is standard across the range, including a pre-collision safety system, autonomous emergency braking and lane departure alert with steering assist. All-speed active cruise control, auto high beam and reversing camera are also standard^^.

The SL adds blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert^^, rain-sensing wipers and electro-chromatic interior rear-view mirror while the three higher grades have front and rear clearance sensors.

All models are equipped seven airbags and a comprehensive range of electronic safety features including Hill-start Assist Control^^ and a sway-warning system.


Ascent now has the advanced safety features, an upgraded multimedia system, seven-inch display audio with Toyota Link# connected mobility, Optitron instruments, 4.2-inch multi-information display, power lumbar adjustment on the driver's seat and LED head lamps.

The recommended retail price of $27,690* represents an increase of just $1,200 with the added safety spec alone more than accounting for the increase.

Ascent is also offered as a hybrid with additional features including dual-zone air-conditioning, keyless entry and ignition, a drive mode select function - and a sub-$30,000* price that is $500 less than the superseded model.

The new hybrid system delivers fuel economy as low as 4.2 litres/100km^ - a better figure than the second-generation Prius sold in Australia until mid-2009.

Ascent Sport, distinguished by its sports bumper and side skirts, features an 8-inch display screen, satellite navigation##, a 7-inch multi-information display, premium steering wheel and gear shifter, clearance sonars, power driver's seat adjustment, dual-zone air and keyless entry and ignition.

The 4-cylinder petrol price represents a reduction of $200* and the hybrid price is down by $1,200* compared with the previous generation's equivalent models.

Camry's sporty SX sedan is fitted with the new 19-inch wheels, sports suspension, leather-accented sports seats, paddle shifters and wireless phone charger. The $33,290* 4-cylinder price is $200 lower than its equivalent predecessor.

At the top of the range, the SL is even more comprehensively equipped than before with a 10-inch head-up display, electro-chromatic rear-view mirror, paddle shifters for both petrol and hybrid, rain-sensing wipers, ventilated leather-accented seats and power-operated front seats and steering column adjustment. It is also gains blind-spot monitor and rear-cross traffic alert.

SL prices also take into account that the moonroof on hybrid and the opening panoramic roof on petrol models are standard. A moonroof was previously optional.

Camry SX and SL are also offered with the new direct-injection V6 engine and eight-speed direct-shift automatic transmission for just $4,000* more than the variants equipped with the four-cylinder petrol engine.


The front design for the new Camry features two-piece grilles with contrasting personalities - premium refinement for Ascent, and a more aggressive, sportier look for Ascent Sport, SX and SL.

The bonnet is lower and, together with the grille and Toyota emblem, they blend seamlessly into the A-pillar, producing a stance that is more aggressive than any predecessor.

The profile is sleeker. By lowering the hip points and therefore seating positions, the design team was able to reduce the car's overall height without sacrificing interior space.

Striking character lines along the body augment the aggressive front and rear fenders, giving Camry a new level of sportiness.

The completely redesigned interior is functional and futuristic. Drivers have a sporty cockpit-style environment with gauges angled towards them while the front passenger is treated to a sense of openness.

The dashboard, instrument panel, centre console and door trims employ soft touch and premium materials with a mix of tones and hues. Quality stitching adds to the level of craftsmanship.

Re-engineered seats have improved ergonomics and comfort, contributing to more refined accommodation throughout.

Toyota's latest in-vehicle display technologies provide integrated information with minimal distraction. Depending on the grade, there are up to three available interlinked displays: a multi-information display in the instrument cluster, a control panel for the audio, navigation and HVAC, and a 10-inch colour head-up display.


Camry has been available in Australia since 1983 with sales topping 930,000 cars - 705,000 four-cylinder cars, 46,000 hybrids and almost 180,000 V6s.

In addition, Toyota's V6 Aurion contributed a further 111,000 sales, bringing the combined total well beyond a million.

Camry is the first Toyota sedan to adopt TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture), which has transformed the way the company designs, engineers and packages its vehicles.

This lightweight and high-strength structure improves torsional rigidity by 30 per cent, enabling Toyota to apply its engineering and design strengths for a more dynamic character, with added emotional appeal in the way Camry looks, feels and drives.

Further aiding performance is new fully independent rear suspension system that contributes to responsive handling, precise steering control and comfort.

In addition to the new architecture, Toyota has used its industry leading body design expertise and manufacturing technology, including Laser Screw Welding and body adhesive, to increase the rigidity of body joints.

Camry's stronger body contributes to improved handling, by providing a stable platform for the new suspension, while also boosting safety and durability, and reducing noise.

Known as the GA-K platform, the new TNGA-inspired underpinnings deliver a lower centre of gravity which contributes to making Camry more agile with better overall performance during accelerating, braking and cornering.

They have also created a new dimension of design freedom, resulting in a stylish and sporty silhouette that includes an extended wheelbase and a wider stance.

Through TNGA, the Camry now has an ideal driving position for the driver, allowing for better concentration on the road ahead while helping to reduce fatigue.

These changes, along with a lower beltline, redesigned instrument panel and thinner windscreen pillars, improve visibility and therefore safety.

Relocating the hybrid battery from the boot to underneath the rear seat means there is now no difference in luggage capacity between Hybrid and all petrol models except four-cylinder Ascent.

Relocating the Hybrid battery also aids driving characteristics by lowering the vehicle's centre of gravity.

Increased use of high-strength steel and hot stamping materials contribute to weight reduction, enhanced tensile rigidity and dent resistance.

New construction techniques have allowed the use of thinner body panels for the roof, boot lid, front and rear doors, and front fenders to reduce weight.

Additional sound absorbing and insulating materials result in a quieter cabin.

Improved Packaging:

Camry's new platform has given the designers freedom to explore new packaging options.

Key dimension changes in new Camry include a 50mm in wheelbase, to 2825mm, a 25mm reduction in overall height and a 40mm reduction in the height of the trailing edge of the bonnet.

New Camry has wider front and rear track, for a flat-riding stance.

Front track has been increased by 10mm and rear track in by 20-30mm (depending on model grade), among the widest in its class.

The new Camry has an overall length of 4885mm (for Ascent), width of 1840mm and height of 1445mm.
Ascent Sport, SX and SL are 4905mm long overall.

The eighth-generation model has a sleeker profile with lower roof and bonnet lines that contribute to the car's low centre of gravity.

TNGA allows load to be more evenly distributed with the car's major components, including the passengers, being placed lower in the vehicle. This enabled designers to reduce the car's overall height by about 25mm without sacrificing interior space.

The floor is 20mm lower, and both hip points have been moved down and aft.

The front and rear hip points have been lowered by 22mm and 30mm respectively, and both have been moved 49mm aft, optimising head clearance.

Camry's improved driving position helps reduce fatigue. Along with the lower beltline and re-profiled instrument panel, thinner windscreen pillars and repositioned side mirrors, this also results in greater visibility.

Lighter, Stronger Body:

The new Camry platform's light weight and rigidity comes from increased use of ultra-high-tensile steel, and the application of a new pressing and manufacturing technology.

New construction techniques have led to the use of thinner panels for the roof, bonnet, boot lid, doors and front fenders, contributing to weight reduction.

Laser screw welding (with a greater number of weld points) has been incorporated at key junctures for increased rigidity. A special urethane adhesive has been applied to both the windscreen and rear window where they meet the vehicle body.

The fortified body includes additional gussets for the centre pillars that have greatly increased the frame and joint strength.

A new annular frame at the rear enhances structural rigidity, along with additional braces for the rear suspension that can withstand higher levels of lateral force and increase the vehicle's lateral rigidity.

Body design features increased frame joint rigidity and hence overall body rigidity throughout new Camry.

They include a closed cross-section for the front suspension tower brace and cowl body, to further advance the vehicle's dynamic prowess and stability when cornering.

A new process securely joins the outer side member reinforcements, creating an annular frame construction.

The front body construction also includes a radiator support V-brace; outriggers installed from front chassis rails to engine-bay surround; a suspension brace; apron suspension tower design and an apron upper member for increased rigidity.

The front-seat area sees the seat rails fastened directly to the body. A continuous flange has been included across the seat cross members, coupled with a new, stronger front-seat bracket.

The rear-door area adopts an annular frame construction that increases body frame joint rigidity. Annular construction is also used for the rear body frame.

Special attention was paid to six joints in the body for optimum rigidity.

The front pillars wrap around the rocker panel; the number of weld points on the flange between front pillar and roof rail has been doubled; the centre-pillar top joint has almost doubled in width and number of weld points doubled; a gusset has been added to centre-pillar inner side and the centre pillar now joins to the rocker inner; a quarter reinforcement has been added to the rear end of the rocker; and adhesive has been added to the joint between the rail outer and roof-side outer.

Spot welding is used for the joint between the roof and rail.

High-rigidity urethane sealant is used to secure the windscreen and rear window.

Rear suspension lateral rigidity has been increased.

Toyota has added braces to the rear-suspension member installation points, as well as installing an under-floor cross member and strengthening the rear cross-member joints.

High rigidity mounting points have been adopted for the rear suspension.

Building on the Camry's reputation as an extremely smooth and quiet car, Toyota engineers incorporated extensive additional sound absorbing and insulation materials.

Toyota Camry's new powertrains have been engineered to provide spirited performance and driving enjoyment, coupled with impressive fuel economy.

Camry is offered with a next-generation Toyota Hybrid System featuring an all-new 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine or a new 24-Valve Quad Cam 3.5-litre V6 petrol.

Camry is also offered with a 2.5-litre petrol engine, now matched to an improved six-speed automatic transmission.

Both new engines have advanced direct-injection technology and their transmissions have sequential shifting, to enhance the sporty driving experience.

The new V6 is the most powerful engine ever offered in a naturally aspirated Toyota sedan in Australia and is matched to the make's first eight-speed direct-shift transmission.

Fuel economy has been optimised, with the new Camry Hybrid offering combined cycle economy of 4.2 litres/100km* for Ascent and Ascent Sport hybrid models.

In more firsts for Camry, the automatic transmissions for the V6 and 2.5-litre petrol models have down-shift blipping control and all three powertrains have Drive Mode Select.

Camry Hybrid's Drive Mode Select can operate in EV (electric vehicle) mode.

In addition to D-4S injection, the intelligent dual variable valve timing in the Hybrid petrol engine and new V6 engine have a wide range of inlet camshaft timing variation, for optimum flexibility.

Standard engine features across the three powertrains include variable cooling system (with electric pump on Hybrid), full variable oil pump and cooled exhaust-gas recirculation.

New Camry Hybrid has combined maximum power of 160kW.

Its new Toyota A25A-FXS petrol engine in Camry Hybrid delivers 131kW of power at 5700rpm and 221Nm of torque from 3600-5200rpm, while the electric drive motor has maximum power of 88kW at 4500rpm and maximum torque of 202Nm from 0-1500rpm.

The new Toyota 2GR-FS V6 has 59 per cent more power than the last V6 offered Camry, delivering the 224kW at 6600rpm and 362Nm of torque at 4700rpm.

Camry's 2.5-litre petrol offering, the 2AR-FE engine, delivers 133kW at 6000rpm and 235Nm of torque in Ascent grade. Ascent Sport, SX and SL have an additional 2kW of power and 4Nm of torque.

New Toyota Hybrid System:

Toyota has redesigned Camry's hybrid system throughout - for increased performance, driving smoothness, economy and package efficiency.

The petrol engine, electric motor, Power Control Unit, transaxle and HV metal-hydride battery are all new, with the battery relocated under the rear seat to increase boot capacity and lower the vehicle's centre of gravity.

Energy loss has been reduced by approximately 20 per cent thanks to efficiency improvements, notably in the engine, PCU and transaxle.

Improvements in cooling-system efficiency for the Power Control Unit have delivered a further ten percent reduction in energy loss.

The new The Hybrid petrol engine was purpose designed for the application and has leading-edge combustion efficiency.

It has 11 per cent more power and four per cent more torque than the superseded engine, with maximum torque delivered 900 rpm lower in the range.

Compression ratio has been increased from 12.5:1 to 14.1:1 for increased thermal and fuel efficiency, while a 4.5 per cent longer stroke has been adopted to maximise the benefits of Atkinson cycle operation.

The new engine has bore and stroke dimensions of 87.5mm x 103.4mm, compared with the previous engine's 90.0mm x 98.9mm.

Key features also include D-4S dual injection technology, high-volume/high tumble ratio inlet ports, a wider included-valve angle, laser-cladded valve seats and VVT-iE (intelligent variable valve timing electric) on the inlet camshaft.

Electric rather than oil-pressure actuation provides quicker valve-timing adjustment and hence reduced emissions, even at low revolutions and in cold temperatures.

It also assists in smooth and rapid engine start, as the Hybrid system stops the petrol engine when it is not required to power the car.

The D-4S system uses multi (6) hole high-pressure injectors for the direct-injection system, to boost output and fuel efficiency, and reduce emissions.

Depending on driving conditions, it delivers fuel via the direct injectors, low-pressure port injectors or a combination of the two - there optimising power and economy.

Driving enthusiasts will appreciate the four driving modes in the Drive Mode Select system - EV, Normal, Eco and Sport - with the latter enhancing the car's acceleration. The Normal, Eco and Sport modes can each be used while EV mode is activated.

They can also customise their driving experience by using a new sequential-shift system that allows for manual-like gear changes with the console-mounted shift lever or, on sporty grades, with paddle shifters.

A new Auto Glide Control (AGC) helps to improve fuel efficiency, by calculating an efficient coasting logic while using the Eco drive mode setting.

For example, when the driver lifts off the accelerator pedal while approaching a red light, AGC adopts a setting that acts more like a neutral gear.

The system limits the loss of vehicle speed to ensure smooth engine braking and allows the vehicle to coast to the stoplight.

An indicator light on the multi-information display will alert the driver that less deceleration torque than normal is being used.

Transaxle performance and packing efficiency have been improved thanks to a complete redesign, with a multi-axes layout replacing the previous configuration in which the two motor-generators were on one axis.

MG1 functions primarily as the generator and MG2 as the electric drive motor, but it acts as a generator when the vehicle is regenerative-braking mode.

A newly adopted parallel axis (reduction) gear allowed Camry engineers to achieve the desired level of take-off performance with a smaller electric motor (MG2) than the previous model.

The new Power Control Unit plays a key role in improving Camry Hybrid's operational efficiency, with an improved cooling system and ten per cent reduction in power-stack element loss.

Integrating the micro-controllers and using a new power-stack structure has reduced package size, so the PCU can be installed on top of the transaxle and still allow for a lower bonnet line.

The PCU includes the AC converter unit (inverter) that switches 650-volt AC power from the motor-generators to 224V DC for storage in the battery, and vice versa.

Control of the AC conversion unit has been optimised to further increase efficiency.

A DC-DC converter is also included in the PCU, to provide 12-volt power for lights and ancillaries.

Optimising the DC-DC converter output filter has saved further space and reduced noise.

In the new PCU, the converter's control output has been optimised, to help reduce the vehicle's overall power consumption.

The HV Mi-HN battery has newly developed Hyper-Prime Nickel for higher performance, increased package efficiency and reduced weight.

The new HV battery location allows new Camry Hybrid the same luggage capacity as all the petrol models except four-cylinder Ascent.

Quad Cam V6 & 8-speed auto:

Camry has an all-new V6 engine, offering formidable low-end and mid-range punch.

In addition to direct-injection technology, the 2GR-FKS engine brings Toyota's VVT-iW camshaft timing variation to the Camry name plate for the first time.

Adopting VVT-iW (intelligent variable valve timing - wide) on the inlet camshafts means the 2GR-FKS engine can operate on both the Atkinson and Otto cycles, to optimise economy and performance according to driving conditions.

It helps maximise torque throughout the engine revolution range by extending the range inlet camshaft timing adjustment to include timing retardation as well as advance.

The engine employs the VVT-iW system for the intake, with VVT-i on the exhaust, an efficient 11.8:1 compression ratio, and bore and stroke dimensions of 94 mm bore by 83 mm.

The VVT-iW system has been engineered to ensure high torque production at all engine speeds, utilising the Atkinson cycle in addition to the Otto cycle to enhance fuel economy without sacrificing performance.

Fuel efficiency is further enhanced by decreasing pumping losses from the delayed closing of the intake valves when high output is not required.

When the driver requires a higher load or wide open throttle, intake timing goes back to normal for maximum power.

A new four-point engine-mounting system reduces noise, vibration and harshness.

Advanced features of the 2GR-FKS engine also include reduced friction, especially for the pistons, a roller-rocker valve train, exhaust-gas cooling to reduce emissions and high-temperature water control to increase fuel efficiency by increasing the lubricating oil temperature at low load.

The V6 engine is matched to the first eight-speed direct-shift transmission offered in a Toyota model in Australia and marks the return of V6 power to Camry for the first time since 2006.

The new engine/transmission combination is offered in sporty SX and top-of-the-range SL grades.

The new Toyota UA80E eight-speed multi-mode transmission offers direct-feel shifting for enhanced driving performance, improved take-off and quietness, and leading-edge fuel economy thanks to overdrive 7th and 8th gear ratios.

Manual-type shifts can be initiated using paddle shifters on the steering wheel or the sequential feature on the gear shifter.

Special features include blipping downshift control for smoother downshifts in M mode, all-range torque-converter lock-up control and a wide flex lock-up range, to reduce fuel use.

New control logic allows for smooth direct downshifts, such from eighth to third gear.

Integrated control of engine and lock-up range reduces engine revolution flare and hence improves response.

The eight-speed transmissions intelligent control (ECT-i) offers three driving modes - Eco, Normal and Sport - and manual-style sequential shifts. All V6 models have paddle shifters.

The new transmission provides direct lock-up from gears two through eight to eliminate power loss from the torque converter and to provide rapid shifting.

The eight-speed gear train contributes to optimum fuel economy. Low gear ratio improves acceleration performance while higher ratios deliver lower engine speeds for highway driving, contributing to enhanced quietness and ride comfort.

Improved Six-Speed Transmission For 2.5-Litre Models:

The six-speed Toyota U760E multi-mode transmission in 2.5-litre petrol models has been improved, with several companion features to the eight-speed transmission in V6 models.

It has three-mode Drive Mode Select and auto-blipping control.

Paddle shifters are fitted to SX and SL grade models.

The SX variant has highly responsive upshift control, to assist sporty driving.

This control operates in S mode, for fast upshift response and low shift-shock characteristics.

In addition, the U760E transmission has paddle shifting in D range on SX and SL.

This allows for quick downshifts to increase engine braking on corner entry.

Eighth-generation Camry has new suspension, steering and brakes, for improved dynamic performance, steering precision, safety and ride comfort.

Toyota has redesigned Camry's MacPherson-strut front suspension and developed an all-new fully independent rear suspension, for improved handling stability, grip and ride comfort.

In addition to its mechanical grip, new-generation Camry has a range of aerodynamic features to boost handling stability.

These include aero stabilising fins on the leading edges of the front quarter windows, the rear combination lamps and in five locations on Camry's full under-floor covers.

Aero spats are fitted in forward of the front tyres.

Camry's suspension hardware and geometry have been revised throughout, and new suspension dampers developed.

The new dampers have saturation-type valves, to provide optimal damping force for both handling stability and ride comfort.

Camry's new platform, stronger body and new suspension braces provide the stable foundation for the new suspension, which in the case of the rear suspension replaces a system of struts and dual lower links.

Camry also has a lower centre of gravity and a larger footprint on the road, with a longer wheelbase and wider track.

The new front-suspension design includes lower placement of the upper supports, shorter coil springs and larger caster angles, to lower the bonnet line.

The amount of caster-trail has been increased, for greater straight-line stability.

The strut bearing is mounted coaxially with the king-pin axis. The moment around the king-pin axis has been reduced, for comfortable steering and more efficient change of direction.

The left and right stabiliser-bar bushes have been moved further apart, to increase roll rigidity and provide high levels of steering response, with a stable stance and flat ride.

Camry SX has a stiffer stabiliser bar, to assist sporty driving.

The bound-stopper characteristics have been recalibrated, to improve stability when cornering and reduce road shock when driving over rough areas such as speed bumps.

Camry's new rear suspension design and saturation-valve dampers have enhanced handling stability while maintaining premium ride comfort.

The suspension design includes separate spring and damper units, with the dampers located forward of the axle line and the coil springs behind, to maximise luggage space.

The dampers are inclined forward, reducing longitudinal low-frequency input.

The new rear geometry, including suspension-arm, bushing, damper and stabiliser-bar location, enhances suspension effectiveness.

Special attention was paid to the position of pivot axis for the trailing arms. A high pivot point tilts the tyre movement curve rearwards when travelling on uneven roads.

Bushings have been placed on all arm joints, to reduce high-frequency road input. The trailing-arm bushings are tuned to reduce road shock.

The bound-stopper characteristics have been optimised to provide a high level or stability when cornering and reduce road shock on rough roads and over speed bumps.

Camry's steering system is electric power-assisted rack and pinion, with the electric motor and ECU mounted on the steering rack housing rather than on the steering column to lower the vehicle's centre of gravity.

The system is vehicle-speed sensitive for reduced steering effort at low speeds and confidence-building steering feel at highway speeds.

All Camry models have tilt and telescopic steering column adjustment, with power adjustment and a memory function on top-of-the range SL grade.

New Brakes:

New-generation Camry has a larger brake package, for increased stopping power and longevity.

Front-brake rotor diameter has been increased by 9mm and rear rotor diameter by 5mm.

For the first time, Camry has an electric parking brake, operated by switch located behind the gear lever.

Parking brake operation can be linked with shift-lever operation.

To release the brake, move the shift lever from P to any other shift range while pressing the brake pedal with automatic mode ON.

To activate the parking brake, move the shift lever from the selected range back to P.

Camry's mechanical braking system is back by a full suite of electronic driving safety features - ABS, Vehicle

Stability Control, Traction Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist, Hill-start Assist Control and Brake Hold.

Camry Hybrid has the added feature of Electronically Controlled Brake system (ECB), to smoothly balance mechanical and regenerative braking.

Cooperative control maximises the amount of energy recovered from regenerative braking - where the electric drive motor (MG2) acts as a generator to slow the vehicle.

Toyota's eighth-generation Camry has a suite of leading-edge safety technology as standard equipment.

All new Camry models have Pre-Collision Safety System (Autonomous Emergency Braking), Lane Departure Alert with steering assist, seven SRS airbags, vehicle stability control, traction control, ABS anti-skid brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and Brake Assist, Hill-start Assist Control, Brake Hold and Trailer Sway Control.

They also have the driver-assist technology of Auto High Beam, All-Speed Cruise Control and reversing camera with Back Guide Monitor

Sporty SX has the added driver-assist feature of front and rear clearance sonar with eight sensors, while top-of-the-range SL adds Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, rain-sensing wipers and electro-chromatic interior rear-view mirror.

These technologies are designed to reduce the risk of a collision and deliver additional benefits to make life easier for the driver while helping to reduce fatigue.

A blind-spot monitor* and rear cross-traffic alert* support safer driving by giving the driver real-time information about the area immediately around the car.

Occupants are further protected by Camry's all-new highly rigid chassis and body structure.

Pre-collision system*

At speed ranges of between 10km/h and the vehicle's top speed this system uses a windscreen-mounted camera and millimetre-wave radar sensor to detect vehicles on the road ahead.

If it calculates a risk of a collision, it automatically warns the driver with a buzzer and alert in the multi-information display.

At the same time, the Pre-Collision Brake Assist engages to provide extra braking force when the brake pedal is pressed. If the system determines that the possibility of a frontal collision with a vehicle is extremely high, the brakes are automatically applied to help avoid the collision or help reduce the impact of the collision.

Active Cruise Control (ACC)*

ACC uses the same millimetre-wave radar as the pre-collision system to maintain a set distance from the vehicle ahead. The system will slow the car to a standstill if necessary and accelerate smoothly back to the pre-selected cruising speed once the way is clear.

Lane Departure Alert (LDA)*

LDA uses the camera on the windscreen to track the vehicle's course between lane markings on the road surface.

If it judges that the Camry is about to move out of its lane without the turn indicator being used, the system sounds a buzzer and lights up a warning on the multi-information display.

If the vehicle is still moving outside the lane, it will apply light steering force to help the driver bring the vehicle back on course.

The technology includes a Sway Warning System that detects movements within the lane that indicate a fatigued driver. The system will warn the driver through the multi-information display and buzzer and suggest the driver takes a rest from driving. The sensitivity of this function can be adjusted.

Automatic High Beam (AHB)*

AHB uses the windscreen-mounted camera to recognise the lights of oncoming vehicles or traffic ahead, automatically switching the headlights to low beam to avoid dazzling other road users. It returns the headlights to high beam as soon as the road is clear to provide maximum night-time illumination and driver field of vision.

Blind-spot Monitor (BSM)*

BSM uses radar sensors mounted on the rear corners of the vehicle to detect nearby vehicles in adjacent lanes as they move into the driver's blind spot. The driver is alerted to their presence by LED warning indicators in the door mirror on the appropriate side of the car. The LED indicators will remain illuminated for as long as the vehicle remains in the blind spot. If the driver operates the turn indicators, intending to move into the path of the other vehicle, the LEDs will flash rapidly to draw further attention to the potential hazard.

Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA)*

RCTA uses the same radars as the BSM to monitor approaching traffic from either side as the vehicle is reversed out of a parking space, and warns the driver if any vehicles are detected.

Hill-start Assist Control (HAC)*

HAC prevents vehicle rollback when on steep inclines by applying the brakes and holding them for approximately two seconds. This allows easier take-off by providing more time for the driver's foot to move from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal.

Trailer Sway Control (TSC)*

TSC controls trailer sway caused by crosswinds, road undulations or the driver's steering operation when towing. It brakes and controls engine output to prevent swaying movements from becoming too large.

Brake Hold

This function maintains brake pressure at all four wheels after the vehicle has been stopped using the brakes. It does not require the driver's foot to remain on the brakes.

It is operated by pressing a button next to the electronic park brake. Rear brake lamps will activate when brake hold is active. It is automatically disabled once the driver uses the accelerator.

Toyota's new-generation Camry exhibits a confident attitude with exterior and interior designs that evoke a more emotional response, while maintaining the model's long-lasting appeal.

New Camry's exterior is both refined and athletic while the driver-focused interior adopts premium materials and high-quality craftsmanship.

Designers focused on three primary goals to deliver a more exciting and emotional character: a distinctive, low centre of gravity that results in a firm wide stance; a practical yet emotionally styled cabin profile; and a sporty and upscale image inside and out.

The vehicle's premium styling reflects the Toyota design philosophy of vibrant clarity, a combination of flair, ingenuity and challenge.

The vehicle has a dynamic silhouette with deeply sculpted character lines, an extended roofline and a longer, wider stance with lower bonnet and roof lines that reflect the car's lower centre of gravity.

Interior space has been expanded thanks to a longer wheelbase (50mm). Despite the roof being 25mmm lower, head room has been maintained by lowering and moving rearwards the occupants' hip points and therefore seating positions.

At the front, Camry features a slim upper grille that encompasses a commanding Toyota emblem and the LED headlights, in keeping with Toyota's "keen look" philosophy. For hybrid variants, the emblem is tinged blue.

New grade names have adopted - Ascent, Ascent Sport, SX and top-of-the-range SL. Camry's Hybrid power train is offered in Ascent, Ascent Sport and SL grades.

Visual differentiation between the grades has been increased.

There are two distinctive lower grilles for added showroom appeal - one is a single, large opening with horizontal bars for Ascent - while the other variants adopt large side intakes and a powerfully expressive trapezoidal gloss black mesh grille.

For further differentiation, Ascent Sport has a matte-black grille, while SX and SL feature high-gloss black with a silver finish at the base of the grille, for a premium feel.

All Camry models have LED Bi-Beam headlamps, DRL/clearance lamps and rear lamps.

The size of the low-beam road-surface illumination pattern has been increased, for greater visibility.

In a first for a Toyota sedan, the headlamps have two-colour moulded outer lenses.

SX and SL have solid DRL lenses, for a high-grade feel. The lenses are layered in a three-dimensional design and repeat at regular intervals towards the outside of the vehicle, along the line-type LED turn signals.

At the rear, Ascent and Ascent Sport have LEDs for the tail and stop lamps, increasing the vehicle's sophisticated appearance.

SX and SL use LEDs for all rear lamps, to further reduce power consumption. As part of the grade differentiation for SX and SL, the tail lamps adopt overlapping light-guide illumination for premium quality and greater depth.

Camry SL 3.5 and 2.4-litre petrol models have a panoramic roof as standard equipment. It is optionally available on SX.

The SL Hybrid model has a glass moonroof as standard equipment.

Camry design team members took full advantage of the TNGA platform's versatility to create an expressive sedan with an energetic silhouette.

Camry's bonnet exhibits sculpted character lines and, thanks to the TNGA platform, has been lowered 40mm to create a more streamlined and aggressive look.

Designers reduced Camry's overall height by pursuing a wind-cutting shape and improving aerodynamics while maintaining interior head room.

Striking character lines flow into prominent front and rear fenders that frame grade-dependent 17, 18 and, for the first time on Camry, 19-inch alloy wheels.

The new wheel designs help provide greater distinction between model grades.

SX has 19-inch by 8-inch black machine-finished alloy wheels and an aggressive body kit with a unique rear bumper and smoke-tinted rear combination lamps.

Ascent and Ascent Sport have 17-inch by 7.5-inch silver-painted alloys with 10-spokes, while SL has 18 x 8-inch bright machine finished and silver-painted alloys.

At the rear, the C-pillar area in particular reveals fluid lines and complex shapes with corner edges that promote smooth airflow.

There is a newly designed Camry badge that features a simple font and bridgeless letters.

Eight exterior colours are offered, including three mica metallics, three metallics and one crystal pearl.

New-generation Camry's completely redesigned interior is functional and futuristic with an emphasis on personal space and craftsmanship.

A sporty cockpit-style environment presents gauges angled towards the driver while the front passenger is treated to a sense of openness and freedom that results from the innovative dashboard design.

A sweeping yet elegant new character line flows down from the instrument cluster and bisects the centre console.
The design blends ease of use for controls with a modern sculptural look that is pleasing to the eye.

Interior surfaces employ premium soft-touch materials with an advanced mixture of tones and hues to enhance passenger comfort and visual satisfaction.

The re-engineered front seats offer improved ergonomics, maximum comfort and a newfound level of ease and engagement, with sports seats in SX and the Camry first of ventilated seats in SL.

Ascent Sport, SX and SL have eight-way power adjustment and power lumbar adjustment on the driver's seat, while SL has the additional feature of an eight-way power-adjustable front passenger's seat.

Rear-seat accommodation is also more refined than ever, providing improved comfort and ergonomics.

Exquisite stitching on the front and rear seats helps demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship found throughout the vehicle.

Interior trim is grade specific, beginning with Black fabric on Ascent and Ascent Sport.

A multi-information display (4.2inch on Ascent, 7-inch on other grades) sits within the instrument cluster.

Ascent has a 7-inch display audio, urethane steering wheel and urethane shift lever.

The other grades have 8-inch display audio with satellite navigation, premium steering wheel and premium shift lever, with paddle shift as an additional feature on SX and SL.

The audio units are seamlessly integrated into that centre console with a flush design.

All Camry models have tilt and telescopic steering column adjustment, with power adjustment and a memory function on SL.

The flagship model also has 10-inch colour head-up display, an electro-chromatic interior rear-view mirror and intelligent ambient illumination.

SX and SL have a wireless phone charger*.

Two-meter Optitron instruments feature across the board in new Camry, with a tachometer in petrol models and Hybrid System Indicator in Hybrid models.

Camry Hybrid also has an ECO accelerator guidance display and ECO Score display, to assist drivers in maximising eco-friendly driving.

In-cabin storage locations include a 7.3-litre console box to that can accommodate tablet computers, including USB charge ports in SX and SL.

There is a small storage space with a lid on the driver's side lower instrument panel, as well as a two-level tray in the centre console to store multiple items.

The lower tray can be accessed by sliding the upper tray forwards. A USB/AUX terminal, and 12V DC accessory socket are located in front of the tray.

Eight-generation Camry is set to extend the famed Toyota model's reputation as one of Australia's most popular and enduring vehicles.

With its name derived from the Japanese kan-muri which means "crown", Camry has established itself as a true global car.

It was originally developed in the wake of the oil shocks of the late 1970s, meeting a global need for spacious cars powered by engines designed to beat soaring fuel costs and comply with stricter fuel-efficiency regulations.

Camry was introduced to Australia as an import in front-drive lift back guise in 1983, winning several "best car" awards.

It quickly moved to the top of its class, creating a powerful brand that has become a household name and consistently topped the sales charts.

The second-generation model in 1987 marked the start of local production. Australia became the first Toyota affiliate outside Japan to build Camry, with cars produced at its plant in Port Melbourne.

It featured an electronic fuel-injected Twin Cam Multi-valve engine and independent suspension all round.

An imported Quad Cam V6 model was added to the range in 1988.

In February 1993, the new wide-bodied Camry was launched by Prime Minister Paul Keating, who described the third-generation car as "another quantum leap in the history of the Australian automotive industry".

Larger in every dimension than the previous model, it became classified as "mid-size" and took over the mantle of Australia's best-selling medium car - a title it has held ever since.

The last Camry to be built at Port Melbourne rolled off the production line in December 1994. Two weeks later, Camry was being produced at a new manufacturing site in Altona.

Exports to the Middle East of locally built Camry began in 1996. Total exports from Altona eventually exceeded 1.2 million cars.

Introduced in 1997, fourth-generation Camry was quieter, lighter and more powerful, with better ride quality and improved handling.

The fifth generation, launched in 2002, featured significant local development, including brakes, headlamps, electronics and suspension calibration.

In 2006, the sixth-generation Camry delivered major improvements to interior space, performance and driveability while maintaining its fuel economy. It had greater structural rigidity, more active and passive safety features, improved comfort, lower noise levels and reduced emissions.

Camry made history in 2010 with the introduction of Australia's first locally built hybrid car, which offered seamless power delivery and exceptional fuel economy.

It was the first built-in-Australia car to combine electric power steering, electronic brake control, regenerative (electric) braking and electric air-conditioning.

Seventh-generation Camry was unveiled in 2011, powered by a new 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission, along with improved driving dynamics, a more spacious cabin, expanded safety features and even better value for money.

It was joined in early 2012 by its hybrid twin, with maximum power jumping almost eight per cent to 151kW to make it the stand-out performer in the superseded Camry range.

In 2015 Toyota updated Camry with a new look, changing or re-engineering more than 800 parts.

The hybrid model line-up was been expanded from two to three variants and a standard-alone sports model the SX introduced, with an Australian developed chassis package.
