TOYOTA AUSTRALIA RECALLS CAMRY, COROLLA, PRIUS AND RAV4 VEHICLES TO REPLACE ELECTRONIC BRAKE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY

Toyota Australia has today announced that it will initiate a safety recall on 183 Camry, Corolla, Prius and RAV4 hybrid vehicles sold to consumers that were produced between April 2019 to May 2019.

In the subject vehicles, there is a possibility components of the electronic brake booster pump assembly may have been manufactured improperly. In some cases, the brake booster pump may stop operating. If this occurs, multiple warning lights and messages could illuminate on the instrument panel and audible chimes could sound.

After several brake pedal applications, power brake assist could be lost completely. A loss of power brake assist while driving could increase the vehicle stopping distance and may increase the risk of an accident.

Toyota Dealers will notify all involved vehicle owners about this recall personally by telephone, requesting they make an appointment at their preferred/closest Toyota Dealer to have the vehicle inspected. If owners cannot be reached by telephone, a letter will be sent to their last known address.

Expected commencement timing is July 2019.

For all involved vehicles, Toyota dealers will inspect the brake booster pump and replace it with a new one if necessary, free of charge.

There have been no reported incidents or injuries in Australia or worldwide caused by this condition.

A2. There are approximately 183 vehicles sold to consumers involved in Australia.

A3. The involved vehicles were produced between April 2019 to May 2019.


Q4. What is the condition?
A4. The subject vehicles are fitted with an electronically controlled brake booster pump, which consists of an accumulator and a pump motor. The pump motor contains a plastic brush holder that holds motor brushes. There is a possibility that due to an error in the manufacturing process, the dimensions of the brush holder are not to standard. This may cause the pump motor to stop operating. If the pump motor stops operating, multiple warning lights and messages could illuminate, and audible chimes could sound. In this condition, brake assist could be lost, reducing braking performance, increasing the risk of an accident.


Q5. Are there any symptoms/warnings before the condition appears in a vehicle?
A5. Yes, multiple warning lights and messages could illuminate, and audible chimes could sound.


Q6. Can I continue driving the vehicle when this condition occurs?
A6. If this condition occurs, the vehicle owner should immediately stop driving the vehicle and contact their nearest Toyota Dealer for diagnosis and repair.


Q7. What does the remedy involve?
A7. For all involved vehicles, Toyota dealers will inspect and if required, replace the electronic controlled brake booster assembly
free of charge to guests.


Q8. How long will the remedy take?
A8. The remedy will take approximately 4-7 hours (model dependant). However, it may be necessary for the owner to make the vehicle available for a longer period depending upon the dealer's schedule.


Q9. Does this condition affect other Toyota models?
A9. No other Toyota models in the Australian market are involved in this campaign.

A10. Owners with additional questions or concerns are asked to please contact their local Toyota Dealer in the first instance or the Toyota Recall Campaign Helpline on 1800 987 366 (Monday - Friday 8.30am to 5.30pm AEST). Please quote your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

Q12. Toyota recently issued a sales stop on the same vehicles. Is this recall in relation to the same issue?
A12. Toyota Australia recently put a selected number of vehicles on a temporary sales stop, as a precautionary measure to understand the consistency of manufacturing amongst those vehicles. The majority of vehicles inspected were found to be consistent with Toyota's manufacturing standards and have since been released.

Unfortunately, 183 vehicles had already been delivered when the sales stop was put in place and have therefore not been inspected. Subsequently a recall for these vehicles has been announced.
