Toyota's Corolla has established a break of more than 2,400 sales in the battle for line honours as Australia's best-selling car.

Corolla topped the auto industry sales chart for the fifth time this year in August with Toyota dealers delivering 3,050 of the model's hatches and sedans.

The popular small car was supported by a strong Camry performance with 2,095 sedans sold, an increase of 24.3 per cent over the same month last year and a segment share of 54.6 per cent.

Camry sales have risen by more than 950 vehicles in the past three months since the arrival of an extensive upgrade to the range that brought bold new styling, a locally developed sports version and even better value.

Toyota's August sales of 14,505 vehicles also benefited from segment-leading contributions from Yaris, Kluger, LandCruiser wagon, HiAce van and HiAce bus.

The August results lifted the company's 2015 sales tally to 133,059 vehicles - virtually line-ball with the same stage last year and a margin of more than 57,900 deliveries over the nearest competitor.

Key Toyota models were in run-out last month with an updated LandCruiser Prado arriving just this week in dealerships and an all-new eighth-generation HiLux range due in October.

Toyota Australia's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the upcoming new models would further strengthen the company's position as the market leader.

"Toyota sales will benefit from the new high-torque diesel engine launched this week for Prado, along with an improved V6 petrol engine and other updates including satellite navigation on the biggest-selling GXL variant," Mr Cramb said.

"We expect another surge in customer demand with the arrival of the next-generation HiLux in early October followed closely by the introduction of Fortuner, a new seven-seat family SUV with strong off-road credentials," he said.
