FRASER ISLAND FISHING EXPO DRAWS RECORD RESPONSE
The Toyota Fraser Island Fishing Expo has set a new record even before the twentieth anniversary event begins.
Registrations sold out one month prior to the competition, which will be held at Orchid Beach on the north-eastern corner of Fraser Island from May 24-30
The 1,500 places allocated to competitors for the event have already been filled - making the event the first sell-out at this stage since 1995.
A total prize pool of over $200,000 has also set a new benchmark for the Toyota Fraser Island Fishing Expo.
The major prize draw on the final night of the event is a popular attraction.
In recent years the winner of the draw drove away in a brand new Toyota HiLux four wheel drive, while the runner-up won a Southwind boat and trailer equipped with Yamaha 60 horsepower four-stroke outboard.
The 2003 first prize is a HiLux four-wheel drive SR5 V6 Dual Cab valued at $46,772 and second prize is a Southwind Stealth side console boat with trailer and 60 horsepower Yamaha outboard, valued at $27,500.
Third prize is a Toyota Echo 3-door hatch valued at $18,284, and fourth prize a Daihatsu Sirion valued at $15,690.
The combined value of the first four prizes is an estimated $108,500.
Event organisers believe that the enormous list of giveaways is only one reason this year’s event has sold out so soon.
“The event’s popularity has a lot to do with the location, the fishing, the additional activities organised throughout the week - and the friendships struck up at the event,” said event organiser Doug Bell.
“We have noticed more families are attending the Toyota Expo each year. The Junior Excursion Day and the Ladies Day are in fact two of the biggest extra activities during the event.”
Two thirds of competitors each year return to fish the event the following year.
